    Sniper planer set up question

OK i understand the set up. My question is about the leader. You said there is 130+ feet, but im confused on how much of that is wire, what gauge you use, and if you add meat to your lure. Also, how you attach the wire if any. And you mention taking off the planer and reeling the fish all the way to the steel. Do you specificly mean to the hook? or to the wire?I am going to try and put together the exact setup, but i want to make sure i have gotten it right. Im sure i will have more questions.

    Thanks for the help

Tyson, Typical setup has 130 feet of leader attached to the braid. At the terminal end of this you attach your wire, lure, meat combo. Your bridle goes between the leader and the braid main line. Your wire is only 3 to six feet generally crimped to the leader through the haywire you put on the terminal end of your wire leader. You only reel to this conection.
Hope this helps. There is great detail in some of Box's videos on the subject.

Put a snap swivel at the end of your long leader after the planer bridle. Attach whatever you want to that, either a short mono leader to the lure or a short wire leader to the lure, depending on what you're fishing for. Don't need much wire, just a coupla feet to protect from the teeth. Only put meat on there if you want to catch fish.

Good point there Bill. We went to a longer wire leader using a crimp and Brite wire to be a little more stealthy but your setup is easier to handle both getting bait in the water and boat side when it comes time to stick em. Some of my earlier setups had as much as 9 feet of wire but that can be problematic at boat side. Especially if you have seen my gaff work.

Did forget to mention that when crimping directly we use a 100 stainless inline swivel.

And one other big point - Unlike catching fish on a regular setup, when the planer trips and you start cranking the fish in, you probably won't get much fight - You are gonna be winching them in. A good size wahoo is still gonna be pretty green at boatside. You need to be prepared for a hot fish and get the hook in quickly and get the meat in the box.

I have been doing this for over a year now.

I know I know, the design was tested and tested. However, I feel the snap is faster to swap out rigs. We don't reuse wire after we catch a fish on it.

We also use 18' #8 piano wire leaders. We don't use short leaders on anything!!!!

    Stealth baby....Stealth

I use the new Billfisher Stainless 100lb snap swivels. They come in a 4 pack and they are less then an inch long. Very small, very strong and the snap is very hard to open.

The crank right through the swivel tip on my DFA.

We just crank the wire on just like a wind on leader.

Keeps the hands off the wire leader which also never changes the preasure on the fish so he usually stays calm and comes right to the gaff. If he does decide to run off again you don't have to worry about dumping the leader or kinking the wire. It just pulls off the reel like any other leader would.

Wow, I'll have to look into those small snap swivels. I haven't seen them yet. A wind-on snap swivel would be the heat! It might even help Lou with his gaffing!! Thanks for the tip, John.

Bill these are the same snap swivels we used in the DU tournament on dink rods after day 1. I changed them out to keep fresh terminal tackle on.
I also gave Patrick a handful of them to rig the mullets with. I toss them out after 2 trips though.

There should still be some rigged on the mullet droppers. I may have cut off the others on the dink rods.

Good luck when you go out this weekend. They also come in a 75 lb version which is very small.
