SMOKIN' GUN MACKERAL ATTACK 8/16/08

Saturday I had the pleasure of filling in as mate on the Smokin' Gun with Captain Chandler Hogg. It was an interesting day to say the least. Captain Hoggs new boat, the Smokin' Gun II, is a piece of work. When twelve guys and seventeen coolers boarded the boat I knew it was gonna be interesting. The game plan was to try the Mackeral for a little while then try for spades. The mackeral bite was about as good as it gets. We had a very nice grade of (2-3 pounders) coming in as fast as I could get the lines out. Until you have seen 12 guys fighting to get to 5 rods you have not lived. Some of the hooksets I witnessed would have made ol' Roland Martin proud. We are talking rare back and try to yank the planer off hooksets. It was beautiful. We boated well over a hundred macks in just a few hours before setting up to try the spades. The seabass were more cooperative than the spadefish but we still caught a few.
The mackeral fishing has been stellar this year. Seems like they are thick from Wilmington to MD.

If you have a larger group and are looking to book a great boat...give ol Captain Hogg a call. He is a hoot!

Nice work there Geoff. Have heard lately of the rareback hookset with the circles on the river this season as well. Guess you got to learn somehow. Pretty work bubba.

Yeah, they are easy to catch if done right. I am gonna do Spadefish 102 for the Merry Marlin crew. Might be a few days though.

Hey Geoff - Glad you guys got together... that new Smokin' Gun is a sweet ride. Having Chandler barking at the helm is a treat too. You going to fish the Club Challenge with us this weekend?
