Smallest reel for Wahoo fishing?
What is the smallest reel you would use for wahoo fishing? I am hoping to target them this fall but only have my Avet LX's which I use mainly for Kings. I have been warned that they are too small for the hoo so my question is: What reel would you buy to tackle the hoo's and or any of the other beasts that may want some in the big water. I am not overly interested in targeting big billfish but would love to tangle with a tuna or two.
I am considering Shimano 30LRS or 50LRS. I am not afraid of braid but dont want to rely on it and I am still back and forth on whether to go with Tiagras or TLD's. Price is an issue but so is quality. Thoughts?

in my opinion for meat fishing a 30 wlrs will hold 95% of what you will catch. But I am sure you will get a lot of different responses on this subject.

25 class reels and 30 class reels with a good drag and plenty of line are fine for fish of the same lb class. If you hang a big one over 40 lbs get ready for a fun fight. A bigger reel will be more efficient if you get into a bigger class of fish.

THE 50 CLASS WILL BECOME SO VERSATILE FOR YOU ....AND GOD KNOWS HOW MANY BILLFISH AND 60-80 YFT I HAVE CAUGHT ON A 50
I RECOMMEND A NARROW 50 TIAGRA AS WELL FOR NC... COME BY THE HOUSE AND BORROW A COUPLE OF MY 50 TIAGRAS TO TRY OUT...

seriously though.. we dont get a crazy amount of wahoo up here in the nj waters (normally get 2-5 wahoo per year) we do normally deploy wahoo lures on 50s.. i find it be more effective like marty said.. they are versitile and you can do anything you want.. man i have caught a big blue marlin, a small white, a yellofin tuna, a swordfish, tile fish, jigged up tuna, bluefin tuna, makos to 250lbs,, and everything else on a 50 wide.. |

Reel Size
I would also go with the 50's. There is very little price difference between them and the 30's and like metioned above much more versatile. With that being said a 30 will catch all the meatfish you want to catch with proper boat driving, but when you get a pig or three on you will be glad of the extra line capacity.

Why not load the LX's with 50 or 60 pound braid? Any fish gets 600 yards of line from you with ten pounds of drag in a center console, somebody ain't doin somethin right.
Sure, big Tunas are gonna wreak hell on you if you get a multiple, but we are talking Hoo's right? You already got the reels. Put em on some 20-50 pound tallus rods, run em with 8 pounds of drag and adjust accordingly when the fish starts running. Holwachagot |

Box had an interesting answer about using a narrow Tiagra.
You might consider the Trinidads with the braid(40n,n for narrow). They are not like other star drag reels, very precise and the fast retrieve will help you keep up with the fish. ![]() |

I'm with Geoff...
fill those suckers up with braid. I would also buy a couple of tld50lrs. Not too expensive and a quality reel. Filled with 150lb power pro it will catch just about anything swimming out there.

Bailey has some good wahoo reels for sale. Buy them both and use the 30/50 for topside trolling and the 50/80 for your planer rod.
Shimano Beastmasters for sale!!! |
