Canon vs Nikon is like Ford vs Chevy, everyone has their own opinion. I don't think you can go wrong with either one, it's the lenses that matter. Saying that, I think Canon makes better lenses.

The camera is the cheap part , its the Lenses thaT COST!!!!
My wife is a pro photojournalist, the AP gave her Canons, she hates them, Niklon let her borrow the new D3 with all the lenses and she now will not give them back.
My vote is for Nikon!!! the D100-200-300 or d3 if you hit the lottery.

Also remember the camera has to feel "right" in her hands .... not yours or the sales guys. Both brands make great equipment and as mentioned its the lenses that will put a hurtin' on the piggy bank

They both are great cameras. I actually just picked up a new Canon XSi. Canon tends to be a bit more amateur user friendly. Nikon is a bit more pricey but worth it. Head over to a camera shop and play with them both.
Banshee is right, the lenses can get a lot bit pricey!

I have a Nikon D 60 and love it.
I don't know much about cameras but I found it to be very easy to use and it takes great pictures.
Good luck with your choice.

I shoot a D70 Nikon and love it, I have found it to be a very rugid camara. The D40 is a little smaller frame but does about the same thing and very fast for a SLR. As said the lens is where your money is going to be, and don't skimp on them as it is them that makes or breaks your shot...

I've been using the Canon 30D with Image Stabilizing lenses and it's been a nice fit. You can come out of the gate for 2k if you don't go crazy with lenses. As much as I am a Canon user, I've also used some Nikon's and they too are great. I rank them very close to each other. Both brands are now out with a video feature so if that is of interest it will narrow your choices quickly. I believe Nikon included this with their recent consumer/pro model and Canon put it in their high end. For strong sportfish shots no less than 3 shots a second, preferably 5. I'd also look at 8megs and better. I haven't checked lately but CNET.com usually has some pretty good reviews.
Here's an option
