Slip Sliding fishing report, July 2 2008

First nice day since I got back from overseas and brother Slip invited me to join him and Matt on the Slip Slidin to go check on the status of our "pet" Cape Fear fish. Having not fished since my trip with Merry Marlin on June 4, I could hardly sleep last night!

Mid morning departure, quick stop for bait and on the fishing grounds a little after noon, only to find out that we were surrounded by boats. Commercial grouper - snapper folks "vacuuming" the area we have been exploring for the past couple fishing trips. Oh well, plenty water for everybody! We headed offshore looking new bottom and visiting a couple of spots we had not been at for a good while.
Bait and fish were marking poorly today, so we had to make a lot of moves and take a couple of fish from each spot without ever getting on a good bite.

I was fortunate enough to catch the first grouper, a chunky little 24" red, which I decided to release for good luck. Half an hour later I was second guessing my decision until this fella came calling

Matt got in the game quickly with a bigger red....

....and followed it up with a very nice gag

Nick got the gag's twin, while I got my ass handed to me by one of their brothers

A few more groupers, a light line kingfish, some fat snappers and a few flip flop dolphins made for a very enjoyable afternoon on the water. Beautiful, dry and cool (for July) weather was the icing on the cake.

    Box shot

By early evening Matt and I had enough reeling for a day and started experimenting with "top secret" weapons

Made it through the inlet with just enough light to make out the cans.
Mally the dog was pleased with the catch, and so were we.

We packed the fish in fresh ice, and toasted our good fortune with cold Miller Lites.
Thanks for taking me fishing brother Nick.

Very nice guys! I knew this kind of report would be coming (and am hoping for another tomorrow). Glad to see Matt finally got back in the gag swing after swearing that he has a gag curse lately! Geez was it ever flat out there!
