Slip Slidin Ocracoke Report 6/25
Had our family vacation in Ocracoke this past week. Got to fish offshore Wednesday (solo). Plan was to stop at the Abrams and jig bait and head to the Rock Pile from there. Got to the Abrams and started to jig the bottom, which looked decent, to see if there were any triggers. Brought one decent trigger to the surface before the hook pulled. Soon after two decent cobias come up to the transom. I didn't have anything ready to throw at them except for the jig I was using for the bottom. They would chase it but wouldn't eat it. I scurried to tie on a bucktail with a big grub on a spinning rod and a circle hook on a bottom rod. As I was tying on the bucktail, another cobia(estimated at 50) swam right up to the motor and was gone as fast as he swam up. A few choice words were thrown out. I ran back up to the mark and was ready this time. I dropped a sabiki to try for bait and came up with a big bluerunner. Opened the livewell and noticed that there was a pogie (menhaden) still alive from two days prior. I put him on the circle hook and let him drift behind the boat. Two more cobias show up at the transom. I drop the bucktail and without even jigging it I am hooked up. The other fish is following the one I am fighting. The hooked fish decides to go deep and as I am fighting him I hear the rod with the pogey start screaming. Two fish on. As I am fighting the one, the other is coming three quarters out of the water trying to shake the hook. I started putting more pressure on the fish to avoid a cluster and ended up breaking him off. Went back to the other and got him in pretty quickly. First gaff shot, he started spinning on me and wrapped the leader around the gaff and ended up sliding off the gaff. Got the leader unwrapped and stuck him again and on the deck he went. I noticed the next day that I had a blister on my hand from the gaff twistin in it. After a good start, I headed to the rockpile where I trolled for about forty minutes. Landed two barracudas and a bluerunner on steroids. Jigged some good lookin bottom in the Rock Pile area and landed a reef donkey. Headed back to the Abrams and put out a tomtate that got eaten but didn't come tight and never saw the fish. Here are a few shots.

No complaints. Life is good. Slip.

Nice cobia brother Slip! Bloodied up the deck just right.
Did you take some meat to the Pony Island cookhouse and have them do it up for you and the family?
Time to go check on our Cape Fear pet fish, wouldn't you say?

Welcome back brother Biscoto. I know where there were at least two large criitters left behind because of pulled hooks. They should have grown a little bit more since the last trip. MM, I'm sorry I didn't know Marshallburg was in that area. Where is it exactly? I thought it was further inland for some reason. No costas Box, sorry. SERprise, the cobia was fantastic. Cut into cubes, marinated in olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper for 24 hours and grilled (would have used fresh garlic for marinade if I had it).Never eaten AJ. Meat is good, just have to cut the worms out. They are known for having worms, at least in our area. I do want to mention that a large portion of Ocracoke island's beach was closed to vehicle traffic. It was disappointing.
