Slip and I took two wahoos from the Monday Run-Off trip and made plans to cut 'em over lunch time yesterday, after they had a chance to get good and cold on ice overnight.
Before heading over to Slip's house to cut fish I took a quick look at the weather. SW and falling off! My fishing gear was in Slip's truck and the Slip Slidin had fuel and oil, so...... Wahoos will keep on ice one more day!
Noon departure on an "experimental trip". Plan was to go to a place we picked from the map a few miles away from one of our favorite fishing areas and see if we could locate some new bottom. The run out was good in 2-3 foot subsiding south chop. Stopped a couple of places to get some live bait on the jigs and then on we went to the "unknown" 7 miles further north. Not one mile into the ride, the machine marks a nice looking hard bottom. We resist the temptation and keep moving. 4 miles later there's a litlle mark again. We made a couple of loops over it.
Low relief (2-3 foot) hard bottom. 33 miles off in 100 feet. 65 degrees, ripping current, good blue water and it's 4 o'clock! Dropped the jigs twice and caught keeper reds each time. Brought them up slow and released them as I hadn't really planned on keeping fish.
Anchored the boat to investigate further and they were there!
Before I knew it the ice box turned red and our limits were filled.
Run home at 33 knots and made it through the inlet as the sun was setting.
A day on the water with my buddy Slip is precious. Trying something new and succeeding made it extra special.
Thank you Nick for taking me fishing.
