Joined Slip, WhiteLakeBuc, and JMS-ILM yesterday for a day of offshore jigging. A little chilly ride out but the 70 degree water warmed things up a bit. Didn't take long before JMS-ILM broke the ice with the first cobia of the day on a Roscoe jig. Next drift produced another for him and Slip's first of the day. Third drift produced Matt's 3rd cobia for the day and the trash talking began.....especially since myself or WhiteLakeBuc could only produce a few "J.J.'s"....lionfish.
Moved on to another piece of bottom and Pete caught the first African Pompano of the day:
Had to take a picture for di_hrd who is on vacation:
Then things got a little interesting....while reeling his jig up from the bottom, Slip hung the elusive sea monster. Armed with a pinch of Skoal and a fighting belt of all things...
...he went to work and what turned out to be his biggest amberjack ever:
Took a break while moving to another piece of bottom where it was Nick who hooked up once again while myself and WhiteLakeBuc were still stuck catching "J.J.'s". This time he managed to avoid the jacks and caught another cobia, followed by his first blackfin on a jig:
The port side fish box was filling up fast with cobes, an AP, and now a blackfin as JMS-ILM had to step on the box for it to close. Kind of ironic that as that was happening, the starboard side of the boat started to heat up as myself and WhiteLakeBuc finally got our numbers drawn.
I was up first with my first cobia for the day. This guy was missing part of his left gill plate so we had to kill him and take him out of the gene pool. Matt did a nice job of bleeding him out with the gaff.....
Pete was up next with the first and only grouper of the day. Not nearly as big as his one on the last trip, but a nice fish none the less released back to the deep:
Moved to yet another piece of bottom and myself and Pete hooked up with a double of cobias:
Oddly enough when we put one of them in the boat, we noticed something VERY odd.......he seemed to have been to Bojangles that morning and spit up a freshly made biscuit. That led us to believe that the cobes were wondering where the world famous Seabiscuit was and why he did not make the trip!Hope you're having fun freezing your butt off in Wisconsin, buddy!
We'll save you a loin for when you return!
Capt. Rick of Living Waters Guide Service was fishing the same area and we called him in to join us. His first drift produced a double hookup:
And a spectacular one handed gaff shot on his cobia with a jigging rod in the other hand while his client was still hooked up:
Pete kept the streak going on our side of the boat with his second African Pompano of the day:
Now we had our limit of cobia (8) and 2 AP's in the box.....one fish box barely closed and the other about half full...so we headed to the hill, getting back before dark.
Dock shot of the massacre:
Yet another murder on a boat that hasn't celebrated her first anniversary yet...
Thanks Nick, Pete, and Matt for another memorable day offshore. Couldn't have asked for a better time or better company!
