Slip Slidin Jigging Report 4/1/10 AND Timberwolf Jigging Report 4/3/10

A bit late with the reports but it's been a busy weekend.

Myself, JMS-ILM, and SeaBiscuit joined Slip for a day offshore Thursday. Couple of cobias right off the bat before Nick scored on the largest lionfish any of us have seen:

Headed off to the deep to try our hand at the blackfins but to no avail. Watched everyone around us catch them and frustration soon sat in and we ran back inshore to jig more cobias. Didn't take long to get them fired up and had our limit within 30 minutes. Matt was easily spotted on the bow during his streak of 5 drops, 5 cobias.

All of this happened while I was fighting a cobia on the smallest rod and reel on the boat---Shimano Curado 300 with 30 lb. braid termed the "Bill Dance" by Nick. My fish ended up being hooked in the tail and left me with a 30 minute fight before he eventually finished off our limit.

Released another 7 fish in this time period including many in the 40-50 lb. class. Chip was right beside us jigging African Pompano's and caught 12 in short order. We managed to find a 1 ourselves and pulled the hooks on a few more.

    Final tally:

Took a break on Friday while Matt and Nick headed back out again.....hopefully that report will be coming soon.

Matt joined myself, Miss Squid, and our friend Scott on Saturday---took a little bit of convincing to get Matt back out there, but not too much. Jigging bite was much slower Saturday than on Thursday now that the fish had been pounded on HARD for 3 solid days. Miss Squid managed her first cobia (unfortunately no pictures), and Scott caught his first African Pompano:

We did however, get a picture of her first lionfish:

Came back inshore in the afternoon to catch a few b-liners and bass for the box. On our first drift, Miss Squid drops the "Bill Dance" combo (Curado 300/Trevala) with a stingsilver. This is what it resulted in......

    Released.....

Caught a few b-liners before heading home a little later than expected. Great weekend to be out on the water----thanks Nick for the trip on Thursday and thanks to Matt and Scott for joining me on Saturday!

The Slayers of Wrightsville continue to amaze. Mighty fine lemonfish... Judging from some underwater videos I've seen - the lionfish population is quite healthy...

    Cobias, african pompano and blackfin

Quick jigging question on the cobias, APs and blackfin: Are the cobias and APs right on the bottom like a grouper/snapper? Are the blackfin up in the column? What are you looking for on the scope to find these fish? I fish out of Morehead and was on the break Saturday catching bottom dwellers, but nothing like you guys have been rocking!

Any help would be much appreciated.
