I've been out of town for a few days and Nick (Slip Slidin) missed me so bad, he could not stand it! He walked in my office this morning around 11, brought me an egg, bacon and cheese sandwich and said he wanted to take me fishing. Here we go again, I thought. He needs me to get bait or tie some rigs or something! Sure enough, the pogies were thick in the waterway and we got a few.
"So what would you like to catch today?" I asked him. He said: "the Beast went grouper fishing last week and caught some cobia coming and going. I want to catch groupers and cobia". I gave him captain Brian's number and told him to hurry up and call him. Leaving at 2 PM to "catch groupers and cobia" sounded a bit of a stretch to me, but what the heck.
Pushed through a NE breeze to some ledges about 20 miles offshore. Stream water (75 degrees) and flying fish starting at 10 miles off the hill today. I wished I had brought the trolling stuff! Wind from the NE and a strong current from the south made anchoring a pain. On the third stop the hook caught just right and the bottom fishing part of the trip was quickly over with a limit of gags, a few beeliners and a suicidal mahi that ate my lone light line bait.
Judging the water "too offshore" we headed to a near shore wreck to try for cobia. Chumming top and bottom, we quickly got a few runs, but all turned out to be the wrong kind! We released several sharks, including this cute little baby tiger, who came out of his mama's belly biting!
No cobia for us today, but a beautiful sunset was every bit as good. On the way home, I got a call from a friend who caught not one, but SIX cobia at the inlet. I then proceeded to call captain Brian!
