That would be them Worknot. Easy as they may be with a spear gun, they are very hard to fool on rod and reel. And you are absolutely correct, these hogfish are the best eating fish in our waters.

    HOLWACHAGOT,
here's some reading on the hogfish, often called hog snapper and marketed as red snapper:

    Cantcatchnuttin,
numbers are only the beginning. Most everything that gets around is off by a point or two, but even if the number is right on and the machines dialed up right, parking the boat on 'em and fooling 'em into eating your mess is the fun and the art of it all.
    Come join us sometime.

    Seabiscuit,
Thanks for the info on the HOGFISH. Looks like a prehistoric monster with make-up on. I would love to catch one of those things. Do you catch them in your neck of the woods? Looking forward to getting down there and making a pile of color as you do so well. I am intrigued by the different species you continue to pile up What are the large red fish in the picture called? The small red ones are Vermillion Snapper, correct? The two lighter colored fish that look like a big croaker, what are they? I really enjoy the pictures of them all laid out. Sorry for the million questions...believe it or not I find myself restraining to ask a million more. Thank you.

    Holwachagot.

I enjoy the questions Holwachagot, so keep 'em coming.

The larger red fish are red grouper. Along with gag and scamp grouper they are the most common grouper species in our area. In addition to those we get 4-5 more "tropical" grouper species in this area, with a lot less frequency.

The smaller red ones are vermilion snappers

The pink ones are red porgies aka "pink snapper" at the fish house. Plentiful, yet protected by a ridiculous 1 fish per person per day limit!

The hogfish not only live here but thrive in the ledges and coral bottoms around Frying Pan Tower (tip of Cape Fear). The pictures that Worknot posted to tease me are local fish. They feed primarily on crustaceans, crabs and lobsters (the spiny kind of which we also have plenty here) and are not a very frequent rod & reel catch, although their natural curiosity and broad bodies make them easy targets for the spear guns.

In addition to the above there are several more species of bass, snappers and varied reef species we usually catch here. The variety makes bottom fishing so much fun, at least for me. When you come we'll try to catch as many different species as possible. They seem to each have their favorite hang outs and with a little luck we'll find most of them.

Sorry you had to stay tied up with the kind of bite that's out there right now Marty. We never second guess the boss though!
Please tell us (start another thread) about young Will's billfish yesterday. How many bills did you see?
