Slip Slidin fishing report April 3. '06

NC schools are on spring break this week and the Lil' Biscuit, having had all day yesterday to rest up from the father-child tournament wanted to, you guessed it, go fishing! In particular he informed me he was interested in practicing gaffing fish today!

Our new boat is not quite ready yet, but Mr. Slip called mid morning saying he was finished with work for the day and would love to take us fishing. Took the day off, loaded up on Bojangles biscuits and cleared the inlet a little past 11 AM. Glassy 2-3 foot seas made for a nice ride out at 26 knots. No particular plan today other than to find some groupers for Jason to catch and some to practice his gaffing on. Went off about 30 miles in about 100 feet looking to jig some bait. Water was 64 - 65 degrees, current running to the north.

While Slip and I worked on bait, Jason was busy catching reds on the jig

Then he caught some on bait

By the time we were ready to move, Jason had caught a few and was now ready to practice gaffing. That presented a bit of a problem, as the water was too cool for cobia or kings on the light lines and we typically only gaff slob groupers.

I guess we had to look for some slobs for the boy to practice on!

    Big slobs!

All that catching and gaffing made the lil' fella tired.

    The box looked good

It was time to head home. 30 knots got us to the inlet with sunshine to spare. Had to hurry up the dock shot to escape the noseeums that have, obviously, been informed that it is finally April.

    Spring has sprung!
    Cheers,
    SeaBiscuit

The next bite on a jig.
Its a good thing for those fish, that you boys don't have a bottom permit. If you did, they would be in trouble. Capital T, kind of trouble.

What a way to spend the afternoon. Great catch, looks like Jason was able to handle the gaff like a champ!
