Got a crew together yesterday after church, great bunch of guys. Phil, David, Billy, Jonathan and greenhorn Timmy. Left out of the WRC ramp at TC 4:15am, at the helm slipping thru the darkness I get that feeling something is gonna die today
I ask Timmy if he had ever been offshore, nope 1/4 mile of the beach max. Oh boy Crew sacked out on the beanbags I head us SE after getting some professional info Sunday night. Inshore of the 90 I stir the crew and I start get the spread out. RIght of the bat the planer pops and a small 10lb. king in the box, then a short strike on the right short and the right long Capt. Joe gets'em, nice slinger on ice.
We stopped short of the break we were looking as part of the fleet kept steaming offshore to the NE corner. We burn a hour catching up to the fleet and fall in on the break almost immediately David says here they come, 7 lines and the planer come tight and the fire drill starts Everyone on a rod or 2 I start gaffing and killn on the starboard bow and don't stop until the planer fish hits the deck, father forgive me 8 souls bleeding on the deck.
While back Box showed me a little something while filming some Legs 2010 footage that he likes to pull while moving spot to spot and I managed to acquire a couple and deployed them on the flats. Poor baits instant newness knocked off, 2 more bleeding out. One again we get mauled, middle of the mess I catch a boat just about rigger to rigger passing us and guess who? Zack/ Brake Marine doubled over too, not much time to talk as we were all busy. Congrats to the Island Girl having a bluesuit do a little sniffing of the spread!!!!
We manage 3 outta 5 then things kinda slowed, decide to head her down the break to escape the mass of boats, worked several small rips working back towards 302 and pluck a couple more. Eventually I switch back to all meat and find the best rip of the day in 30fthms, good color change 1.5 degree break and good grass offshore of 302. Manage 3 stinkies on the planer quickly so we motor on down the rip before sending it back deep. Eventually we snag and few more mahi way deep and on top before calling it around 3 so we could do some cobia looking before to late, nice 27kt. cruise in shore with no Cobia love, did get to see a small hammerhead cruising 14 buoy.
Finished with 20 mahi 1 king , alot of plucked baits and a ton of laughs, great crew, poor Timmy was glad to see the dock and nearly ate everything Smithfields had trying to make up for being green all day, can't joke him, been there myself but he hung in there and landed a few fish. Capt. Joe Shute stuff snagging most of the fish again today!
