    Skirt String Bulges

    Aloha! SharkJC

That's a good question. I can't answer it from my work station but after work I'll tackle it Slayer Style!!

I'm learning allot about bait on this site. I'm glad I can share the little I know about lures with those interested.

Our super cool host Marty asked me my boat name. It may sound kinda goofy on your coast, but the islanders can't say it without smiling and shaking their heads. MooMooChaser. A moomoo is a silk dresss that is very conservative. most island women wear them. Kinda old lady clothes. only my friends know that name. The Man on the radio calls me by the number on the gunnel.

I think the answer lies in the tailstock of the lure head your trying to skirt. I've had the same problem allso due to the difference in thickness of each brand of skirt. For instance, One lure maker friend of mine switched from Big T skirts to BBL skirts. The Big T skirts were much thicker so when he switched to the slitely thinner skirts there was a slite drop from the head to the skirt. he solved the problem by turning down the tailstock a little less on the next batch

Take a look at the Hot Breakfast BBL in one of my posts above. It's the one without the skirt. Notice the tail stock is stepped to recieve two skirts, one on each step. Allso notice the tailstock is just over half the length of the lure head it self. that slight extra little bit adds support to the skirt and adds form to how it falls.

Another thing to consider is the diameter of the tailstock in relation to the rear taper of the head.

Check out picture one. The two skirts in the middle are called hubless and the two on the outside are octopus.

Check out picture two. These two are glued not tied. Those Green Machine lures are allso glued. A typical rule of thumb is, If the lure maker learned the craft in Hawaii the lure will be tied, simply out of respect to history. Most other makers use glue.

Lures that are made to be glued have a straight tailstock, lures made to be tied have stepped tailstocks.

I hate glued lures. Even though some are done absolutely perfect. I prefer to tie skirts on with dental floss that says dento tape on the container.

    I hope that helps!!

Nice Post slayer. Gotta love the braziliano. How do you do with Jets. I love to run a small jet in the flat. Always seems to get hit.

    Jets

    Yokwe!

Skirts and jets have somthing in common.

Hawaiin lure makers use skirt length and thickness to stabilize lure heads. By lengthen the skirt on a plunger and dropping the hook way back so just the eye is in the skirt the lure will have less side to side action. But too far back and you may as well drag a sock. The skirt length creates drag on the lure head stabilizing it.

A jet stabilizes the lure head allso.

Bubbles trails are a path to the lure's hook that can be seen from further distance.

Before drill holes were popular, islanders used to use a rougher skirt material like naugahide. Smooth on one side but kinda clothy texture on the other to create a long bubble trail. Everyone knew a bike inner tube roughed up with a file before cutting into strips created more bubbles than the strips from the lawn chair or the boars tail. Everyone knew that as the skirt interacts with the air it made smaller bubbles that didn't rise as fast.

The jet lure trys hard to take credit for the bubble trail. But heres the truth.

The bubble trail starts with the face of the lure grabbing a pocket of air in front of it. Jets will simply let the air out quicker, stabilizing the head. This has some upside to it we can discuss in a Jet Thread. I love jets, they have a place.

The Tube has the longest, thickest smoke trail with no jets
