    Skin cancer protection

First of all Marty thank you for letting me post in your world.

Guys I just wanted to remind you that as much as we are out in the sun and on the water we need to be wearing protection and ensuring we are around for many years for our loved ones. I am only 38 years old and have already had way, way too many problems with melanoma and basil cells being removed. My father and I both are fishermen and lived in in South Florida for a while and have learned our lessons. Unfortunately I didn't heed my fathers advice even as he was going thru Flouracil treatments which caused his whole back to turn into a solid scab and was very painful and limited his actions for a good while. I was always told as I was younger to wear sunscreen and a large brimmed hat but I was too young and stubborn and didn';t heed his advice. I have learned my lessons too late now that I am older. When the tops of your ears are like leather, and you have to go the dermatologist every three month basis to get checked out it kind of sinks in. As if I didn't have enough problems stemming from the drunk driver hitting me head on at 90 mph a few years back, I now have to live with my own neglect of my body. Next week I go to get around 12 spots cut out and I wonder, how do I get a basil cell at the crack of my ass which rarely sees daylight. For your family's sake and your own well-being consider this as a a friendly gesture to warn you of the dangers of the sun no matter how gay a big brim farmer hat appears worn on a boat.

Your right about the big "C", sunscreen is a must for those of us in the water ro in the sun most of the day. SF 50 twice a day for me...

I am very nervous with this subject with myself. I think I am need of a full body scan as the freckles and such are overwhelming and maybe I never paid attention to them but its a scary thought. Sadly it probably won't change my habits until i learn the bad news

    a cold.....
Great topic. Thanks for bringing it to everyone's attention. I try to be very liberal with the sunscreen and blistex when I'm out on the water, and I rarely go shirtless out there. I always did like the idea of wearing long sleeves and one of those lightweight breathable face masks you see on the guys in South Florida and the Caribbean. If I got out there more often, I'd buy one of those.

    Anybody remember johnnydeep?

He was a member here who lost that battle. Left behind a wife and young son. Very sad.

We're out there to have fun, not to die or suffer a major illness. I keep loads of sunscreen onboard, cheap insurance, just have to remember to use it.
IE8 says this may be a phishing site....Well, DUH!!!!!!... Stupid jerks can't even spell fishing right.

Wow I remember Jonny what a positive guy. He was an inspiration with his battle.

I've worked on the water my whole life and I burn no matter what sunscreen hats and long sleeve shirts are a must. One thing I must say the new breathable wicking shirts out there make wearing a long sleeve shrt more bearable in the heat
