The weather forecast for the 5th of May caught my attention and I started making calls to my usual suspects of fishing crew. Finally got a commitment from Mike Becker to make the run to the Same Ole area for some trolling and bottom fishing. Scott Erickson ( Reel Dream) managed to get one crew member and decided to buddy boat with me. We met at the boat ramp at 3:30 am and noted that there was patchy fog on the island. As we proceed down the ICW to New Topsail inlet we encountered very thick fog which made visibility nil. I managed to get separated from Scott before the run to through the inlet but he indicated via radio that there was no visibility in the inlet. Long story short, I managed to use my engines as twin clam diggers and knocked the transducer off its bracket. The fish finder was still working, but since it was still dark I held off on making a plunge overboard to put the transducer on the bracket and started our run to the gulf stream. When we got a little more light I made my first plunge overboard to reset the transducer which had quit working . Got the transducer back on the bracket but it managed to come off again in a couple of miles and I gave one more try to get it working again without success. Nothing like a morning swim in 69 degree water ( according to the satellite weather). Encountered a tight swell and several more fog banks on the run out which made slow going. Our first wahoo hit the planer rod within a half hour of lines out. The 32 lb fish fought much harder than this weight and we were convinced during the fight that we had a citation sized wahoo fight. Managed to get the next hoo on the long rigger. The 2 slinger Mahi came on the planer rod. Not bad luck for a day when I didn't know the depth or water temp I was fishing in.
