The Dreaded Braid Loop

Hi guys, thanks for keeping this thread alive, nice to see it in the first page.

I'm going to post a couple of tips that I did in the "Shallow Water World" for thouse that don't make it there very often...

First is "The Dreaded Braid Loop"

It seems that a lot of people are afraid of using braid. I think that comes from not understanding how it works and why it does the things it does, as well as not being able to untangle the loops of the line. Remember that it is loops of line over it's self, not knots...NEVER pull it tight!!!

The loop that comes off the inter spool is one of the most common problems with braid and happens for 3 main reasons.

First having to much line on the spool or overloading the spool with line. I like to have at least 1/8 to 3/16" of spool showing...

Second, comes from closing the bail of the spinning reel with the handle instead of manually closing it with your hand and having line lay over the top of the spool, sorry no picture of that...

Third is putting lose line on the spool. This comes from a couple of things, The end of the cast with the slack line as the lure hits the water or casting into the wind and the line blowing back at you. If you are aware of what is happing to your line, most of this can be avoided.

Most of the time I see people grab the line above the reel and dumping line into the boat on top of more line, only to find that they wind up with more of a mess than they started with, or they will try to cast the loop off the real, only to have the loop grab the main line and tangle it more, in turn, they end up hating braid.

If you will place the rod into a rod holder, preferably on the down wind side of the boat and slowly pull the line off the rod tip,

placing the line into the water,

most of the time the loop will not grab the main line and get tangled more and the loop will come out easily. With the loose line in the water there is less chance that it will become tangled when putting it back on the reel...

Hope this helps you guys some, more tips with braid later...

Reverting Near Disaster

That got you attention didn't it...

Sometimes things happen that we are not aware of and I have racked my brain to figure out how this happened. Sometime this summer the bow of my Skimmer flooded and all my MirrOlure boxes and along with other stuff filled with water and it had turned into a box of rust when I finally found the boxes full of water.

A few of the boxes...

Yep, it was bad, very bad, over 3 grand in MirrOlures alone along with other stuff...

So, cutting off all the hooks and getting out the Overnight Extra Whiting Polident...( always use Overnight Extra Whiting, works better I think)

I went to work. Take a small cooler, I used a 32 quart so the lures could spread out in the solution. To get the most out of it, use very hot water, For 1 & 1/2 gallons, use half the box or 36 tablets. Drop you lure into the solution, stir them around, shut cooler top and let sit over night. Cooler holds the heat of the water in, hot water in important...

Next morning...

Next morning, most of the rust will be gone but what is not, take a terry cloth rag,

it has some roughness to clean with and wipe the lures off. Most all the rust will be gone, what will not wipe off, throw back in the solution and let it soak some more...

Before wiping with rag...

After...

Hour worth or work for a couple 100 or 3 MirrOlures and other lures 98% rust free...

Now if you noticed, the boxes were also trashed...

I took a large screwdriver and lightly knocked the large rust nuggets off, only the very dark spots. I use something different to remove the rust from the plastic boxes. A spray bottle and Wink rust remover works well for this.

Set sprayer bottle to spray setting and fill with Wink. Spray boxes, set on a somewhat level surface and close top, continue to the rest of the boxes. It will take a short time for the Wink to remove the rust and as 1 box starts to clean, pour the left over Wink into another box the still has stain in it and let sit, it will do the work for you. Take garden hose and spray off the boxes to remove the Wink.

Almost like new...

After the hose...

Hope this tip will save you guys some money over the years. This is a trick(s) that I have used over the years to keep my boxes and MirrOlure looking like new...

thanks for those two great posts. totally awesome.

i had the same thing happen in one of my last boxes that i hadn't changed over to a water proof. a few waves had come over the bow which usually just runs out the the back. i didnt check the forward boxes for a few days and one that looked just like yours. i wish i had read your post back then.

when fishing for pan fish or bait with a small jig....tie to the jig using a loop type knot instead of a knot that cinches down on the eye. your jig will have a much more natural action and will out fish the guy next to you that doesnt know this trick, 5 to 1.
