I do find the mullet dredge is much more effective for touney's & bilfish. I find the bally dredge more effective for pot luck fun fishing.

Why not take a couple extra minutes and make your dredge baits look as natural as possible? If you are going to put skirts in front of the springs then thats fine but for naked dredge baits stick to monel wire.
Let see, you have al those metal bars in the water and the springs are going to effect the appearance?

If it works for you thats great. It just isn't every day that fish sees a ballyhoo swimming around with a spring wrapped around his nose. But then again I guess a 4 pound wieght infront of the whole rig looks a little funny to.

For fun fishing like you said you use them for it is a good idea but why not fun fish the same way you would fish a tournament? That way come tournament time you are dialed in.

I think tournament fishing for billfish is a bit different than putting some newbies and those not so familiar with offshore fishing on a mixed bag of possibilites. As far dialed in goes, I quess we do OK. I released my first white in 1971 @ age 11, but sorry I god such a late start.
