This is a simple rig I picked up from Patrick Lemier of Texas Fish & Game for connecting heavy leader to a circle hook. A conventional snell can be unreliable and a crimp or standard knot won't give that tension that angles the circle hook upward when set.
Quite simple; create a 6" surgeons loop, pass the loop through the front of the hook, twist the loop and pass over the hook point, repeat twice more and tighten. It will not cinch down like a knot but its not going anywhere.
I use this knot for pulling or dropping baits with + 50# mono or fluoro and have landed fish even with one side of the loop knot cut by toothies.
I have had failures with well tied 80# fluoro to an 8/0 circle hooks complete with the little curly Q at the end.
I can loosen a heavy leader snell just by just working the tag end a bit.
I cinch em down with pliers; can't figure why the snell would give accept for contact with the fish's mouth.
This rig alleviated this problem when targeting Grouper / AJs.
Open to tips for snelling heavy fluoro though.
