I wish this was a killer offshore report but this one raised money for kids and we were happy to participate. My track record with fishing tourneys has been pretty bad, we sign up it blows, well today was no different but today we turned the tables in a big way!!! I had planned to fish some good holes from the bank for the tourney but a good friend from church said lets fish out of his boat. We prefished 2 days this week and caught alot of good fish but no gators. We decided to fish Bay River as it gave us more options when the blow started. On our first spot at 6am, topwaters on fishing dock lights, after day break and no fish we decide to go up the creek we were on and Phil takes 2 3lbrs. in the crab pot line and we release several thin legal fish. Worked the area and picked up a few more fish when the blow came and did it!!!
Time to move, we decided to try a creek that the netters have absolutely hammered everyday this week. Best idea we had all day! Set up in a narrow creek, deep water and I send the bugs out under the corks and wait. First bug gets inhaled and the fight is on, fish felt ok then ripped off 25 yds of line then comes back to the boat and I thought I had pulled him off. Line come tight again and up the creek he goes and all I can do is hope the 8lb. Floro leader holds, back and fourth and Phil finally gets the fish in the net. We can't believe our eyes, my second biggest speck to date and I didn't even have to go to the CL Jetty to get it. 6.54 lb. official weight 27in x 13in girth.
A very good friend from down the beach, Capt. Lee Parson told me they would bite on the approaching front and he was right, for the next hour we hammered them with every thing we had in the boat, Mirrolures, Yozuris, Gulp, live shrimp, dead shrimp and caught 2 on shrimp heads drifting in the current. We finished our 2 man limit with some nice 2-3 lb. fish.
At the weigh in I took 3rd place overall, 1st place big fish, some nice door prizes and nice pay check to boot. My partner Phil took 4th overall and a nice pay check also, not bad for a couple offshore guys. One of the Junior Anglers flopped a 5.5 lb. speck on the scales, way to go little man!!!! The Shriners Club really put on a great tournament, the sponsors really came through in this bad economy with prizes. I encourage everyone to participate next year, most important it raises money for the Kids. Special thanks to Capt. Dave of Minnesott Beach Bait & Tacklefor all the hard work he put in to pull this off again this year, my hat's off to you sir.
Honestly Box several of the live shrimp died and the heads came off so I tried the shrimp heads to see if they would eat them, they had eaten everything else we had and I got lucky. Thanks guys for the kind words.
