SHORT BUS TIP#9 Proper cup to cup style crimping

First of all sorry I was not able to post a tip last week. My girl had to use the camera. I have it back and will continue to post tips every week.

Now, probably 95% of the folks on here know how to do this properly already, but there have been several posts on the boards this season with people having problems with their crimps failing or not exactly sure how to crimp/swage properly as well as 2nd guessing the method they are using. That leads to not having your head in the game 100% when it counts while on the bite!

What is listed below is the style (cup to cup) that I have been using for a long time and have since seen many others teach as the correct way to go about this. I HAVE NEVER HAD A CRIMP FAIL BY USING THIS METHOD!.
I always like to use a double barrel crimp for all my mono and flouro. I only use the single aluminum crimps for cable.

First make sure you know which size crimp you need for the job. Most packs of crimps have this listed on the back for sizes that correspond to the leader you will be using.

Then locate the correct size notch on your crimping tool that corresponds to the leader and crimp you are using. Some have it stamped on them and some do not.

When using a leader size of 200 lb or bigger most crimp sleeves will have to be crimped more than once to achieve a proper connection. It is crucial that you do not have less than 1/16" of an inch that remains un crimped and flared out on each side of the finished crimp.
Here is a full demo of a crimp that is bigger than 200lb from start to finish. The leade used is only for demo purposes. Pay attention to the amount of the crimp sticking out on each side of the tool.

    Here is the finished product

Now a crimp with less than a 200 lb leader. This requires only one sqeeze of the crimping tool in order to make a proper connection.

When you squeeze down on the tool make sure it is a firm sqeeze all the way till you feel pressure of not being able to squeeze any longer. Some tools even have a stop in order to keep you from overcrimping. Over crimping is one of the most common failures for a broken leader IMO.
I do not like to mushroom the end of the mono with a flame before placing the sleeve on for 2 reasons. #1 I have never had a leader slip through. #2 I do not want any kind of heat source even taking a chance on weaking the leader anywhere past the mushroomed end. IE under the sleeve.

Hope you folks can use this to keep you on the right track and hopefully let you keep your rigs in the water longer therefore putting more fish in the box and/or more flags on the rigger.

    Thanks for your time!

excellent write. I enjoy all the tips.

You mention that you use the double barrel for all of your mono and fluoro, but use the single aluminum for your cable.

Dont you have a problemy with electrolysis using stainless cable and aluminum sleeves?
