I was shown this many years ago. I almost forgot about it until we got into some false albacore last year. The chain pattern on their back reminded me of it and I wanted to share.
Ever been offshore on a slow day and one of the few fish you catch pukes up baitfish that almost resembles the witch/ballyhoo combination that your are pulling except for one small detail? I have had this happen a few times and was prepared for this exact situation. Each time we will deploy a few of these modified witches and voila, we started catching a few more fish.
Start with a few of your favorite witches and a permanent black marker.
Take your witch and gather the hair so it is bundled together. I usually pattern the color that would be the top or back of the bait, except when that color is black. Then take your marker and make bar patterns, chain patterns, spots etc ........get creative!.
This is what you will end up with. The pictures do not do it justice.
You will have to redo the patterns after a few trips because the salt water and sunlight will fade them drastically. I promise you it does make a difference on the days when the fish are keyed in to feeding on a bait that is just a bit different than what your color combo is.
