SHORT BUS TIP #5 Poorman's HOLDZIT FOR SWAGGERS/CRIMPERS
I have nothing against the Holdzit products, great stuff and works like a champ. I will buy a large crimper/swagger holdzit one of these days.
But... until then, I would like to show you a poorman's HOLDZIT that works great. Here is what you will need. I can of oil, preservative, cleaner (IE break free, military 3 in 1) I was introduced to this stuff many years ago by my dad. He used it in the SBI to clean firearms before it was even in the stores. He got it from his marine buddy..... Siemper Fi! Sorry to digress. WD 40 or water displacement formula 40 ain't gonna cut it here. Also, you will need a CROWN ROYAL bag. Some of you that like the brown water should not have a problem procurring one of those. Then last but not least your crimpers/swaggers are must for this to work correctly. Take the CLP and spray both inside and outside the bag. Then insert crimpers/swaggers.
I keep mine stored in the bag and whenever I am not using them. I will re apply the CLP after every 2 or 3 trips when I get back in from offshore with just enough to keep the bag moistened up. If you are like me, I keep all my offshore tools in my arms reach when fishing. As a result, everything gets salt spray and some type of bait funk on them during every trip. When it comes to keeping my crimpers/swaggers clean and ready for use, I simply rinse with fresh water, pat dry and store back in the CROWN BAG.
This is a close up result after 6 years being maintained while working in/out of a salt environment.
Now I ain't no charter mate and cannot put them through that type of punishment......................... yet But I think they look pretty dang functional for alot of years to come.
I hope this tip can help out the old salts and the newbies alike by using what you have to make it work.
Thanks again
Stand by next week for new and improved hybrid old drum rig that was "proven" during the 2008 season.
