Was shown this a couple of years ago as a better way than what I was doing.
Insert tag end 1 of monel up through hook eye
Hold about 1 1/2" of tag 1 down to hook shank with thumb and take other tag end 2 and start wrapping behind the eye down the shank of the hook over top of tag 1
I like to take at least 6 wraps of tag 2 over tag 1
Now pull tight and insert tag end 2 back up through hook eye and pull tight.
You can break off tag end 1 just like you do for a haywire
By having the monel coming back up through the eye of the hook this will allow you to cinch you bait down tight to the hook doing a couple of things for you. Most importantly it will provide a secure connection of the bait to the hook for better rigging and not let the hook deflect during strike. Also, it will allow the hook to stay in place more on the bait and not the hook exit on the belly of the bait wash out as quickly.

4-5 Naked baits tight to you maybe a soft head chugger/ballyhoo combo by itself in the clean water as the odd man out. Use a dredge or small, small squid chain near the boat so you can see it. I downsize my bait to small and leaders to 60lb. with matzuo J hooks 6/0 oshaunghn style or circles nowadays.
