Short Bus/Locker down report 8/18/09
Well the weather man finally got it right for the past several days. With a storm approaching and the seas nice and flat me and fairly new member to SFC LOCKERDOWN headed out today in search of bills and wahoo. Put in at the upper 600low 700 in 40 fathom. Zig and zagged from 40 fathom to 25 fathom all the way up to the upper 700s. Had a good bite on the planer rod with nothing to to show but a cut/slash behind the hook on the retrieve. A bit later, the long line screams and goes slack. Wire trace and mono gone A nice wahoo was my guess with the vicious strike on the same circle as the missed planer bite. At 10:30 a.m. We could not stand it any longer and pushed our way out to the 100 looking for bills. In 80 fathom we get ambushed with four of five rods going down to skipjacks. Kept a fat lil sucker. Going to sear/raw prepare him after hearing SeaBiscuit's post the other day from Clt capt. Then put a 5-8lb flip flop in the box after seeing him emerge from his lair under a sheet of plywood along with 2 of his buddies that proceeded to mangle the spread. Back on our way to the deep when a sail comes in the spread and dang near swallows the squid chain/moldcraft chugger teaser setup. He would not come off the teaser even with a dink I slipped up beside him. He did try the jr ilander on the long line on his way out of the spread. We finally get out to the 100 fathom area and are immediately rewarded with a hot white one in the spread. A successful drop back and gotem'on! Fantastic jumps, greyhounds etc...........3 minutes later gotem'off. 30 minutes later same thing happens with a sail. 30 minutes after that I drop back a dink to another sail, hooked up! I pass to Lockerdown and he does a great job and gets his first ever bill a nice sail that we release to fight another day.30 minutes after that another monster white gotem'on..........greyhounds, jumps,a blistering run then back to boat, crank the belly out, more greyhounds then gotemoff. The fish that jumped off today all hit the only seawitch that we were pulling in the spread. I switched it out for a new witch bait after each fish. It was the only other thing we had in the spread besides naked dinks once we hit the 100 fathom line. I guess more time is needed for a bill that picks up a witch bait after you feed 'em. Final billfish tally 1 for 2 on sails that we hooked up. 1 that would not come off the teaser and jumped 2 whites off.Not to mention all the freejumping whites and sails that kept our imaginations busy between bites. I enjoyed it today Les thanks for having me on your boat and providing a place for us to stay at the coast. Will let you know how the skipjack turns out
Nice report Bryan. Knowing how much you love those billfish, I imagine you had yourself a good time looking at so many today! Matt and I saw a baby sail sunning 6 miles off the inlet this afternoon. All lit up and cute as can be!

Thanks guys. Been playing "what if" in my head all day on the ones that jumped off. Probably should have taken the wire witch bait out of the equation and just pulled the 4 naked dinks. I will say keeping all baits staggered and closer to the boat made a difference
