    Shimano Tyrnos Question

I'm getting rid of my TLD 25's for white marlin fishing. They work great, but I like the new Tyrnos 5:1 gear ratio. My question is this. Is it necessary to get the 2 speed reels. I am really buying the new reels for the high speed retrieve. Is the low gear really necessary? These will only be used for white marlin fishing.

Just my opinion. Low speed is not nec. for white marlin fishing. also, I have spoke to 3 captains that has put the tyrnos through the ringer with 100's of billfish each and one captain that had only caught a dozen or so. Here are there comments.

    1. Great reel to start but we have had to rebuild them much more frequently then the TLD.

    2. Drag got sticky have 20 sailfish

    3. Went back to my old TLD.

My personal experience my have told my why I prefer the tld and why these guys may have had issues. We caught a double header blue that went in opposite directions. We had to dump one of the rods in the water and we chose my rod which had a tyrnos on it. We put it on a ball and threw it overboard and chased down the othe blue for a quick release. We then high tailed it to the ball and picked up my rod and as soon as I commenced the fight the drag was sticky. It had not be sticky before. that just tells me that water is getting in there somehow and may be the reason why the others were experiecing the same problem.

I have heard lots of praises but most have come from folks that have caught less the 20 billfish on them. Again just my opinion.

Thanks Bill, I didn't think it would be nec. for the two speed. I have never had an issue with the tld's, but after this winter and fishing down south I found the tyrnos super smooth, and I can gurantee that the reels had seen more than 20 billfish each. I haven't heard anyone complain about them getting sticky quickly, but that is always good to know. Everyone that I fished with had nothing but praise for them.

When you threw yours over how long was it under? Did you rebuild it afterwards? Was there a lot of salt inside?

I have 2 seasons and many whites and tuna on my Tyrnos 30 single speeds and have not had any problems with them yet.

The captain did rebuild them that week but I have not spoken to him about it since. I will see him in a couple of weeks and will ask.

It was over the side for about 10 minutes

Are you fishing them with braid or mono? On all my tld 25's I have been using hi vis mono, and was thinking of switching to braid for the tyrnos reels.

Just a question but are you sure you want braid on something that will probably be utilizing a circle hook?

I have mono on mine. The Tyrnos 30 has a large line capacity so thier is no need for braid and like Bill said I would not spool them with braid if you will be fishing circle hooks.

I am not too sure. I wanted to get some feedback. I have never used braid before catching white's, and am not too sure that I really want to switch. I fished on a boat in Fl for sails and they strictly used braid. They felt it peeled off the reel faster and you could more quickly come tight after a shorter drop back. I didn't really see or notice the line comming off quicker, but that was their opinion. As far as the % of hookups I did notice a higher % of hooked fish. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the line or if I had really gotten more proficient in the drop back and slow retrieve to come tight. Again this was sailfish and not white marlin. I know that sometimes that extra little bow in the line will mean the split second difference in someone dropping the bait to him or just the snap pop of white boy driving you crazy.
