I fished on a boat in Fl for sails and they strictly used braid. They felt it peeled off the reel faster and you could more quickly come tight after a shorter drop back. I didn't really see or notice the line comming off quicker, but that was their opinion. As far as the % of hookups I did notice a higher % of hooked fish. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the line or if I had really gotten more proficient in the drop back and slow retrieve to come tight. Again this was sailfish and not white marlin. I know that sometimes that extra little bow in the line will mean the split second difference in someone dropping the bait to him or just the snap pop of white boy driving you crazy.

When fishing circle hooks for billfish you want to use mono so you get some stretch when the time comes to set up on the fish. You also have to fight the fish with a light drag setting so spooling up with a stronger line will not give you any advantage since you only fight the fish with 5-7 pounds of drag. If your worried about line capacity the Tyrnos 30 holds 600 yards of 30lb mono which is more then enough for any white or tuna your going to hook.

I didn't think that there was any advantage to using braid on them. On our tld 25's we use 30# with a max of 9# of drag. Never had an issue with line capacity. I think that those rods we were using on the boat in FL were getting dual use.

On our tld's we also when billfishing have the drag set just at the point where they are not drifting out while trolling. Usually 2-3# of drag at the most. From practicing with circle hooks this winter I don't think that this is going to be a big adjustment. I only caught sails this winter, but once you get the feel of the drop it seems way easier to hook them on the circles than J hooks. All of the boats I was on though were using the Tyrnos reels. They seemed to be a smoother set up from the begining so I'm swiching over to them.

Another opinion in favor of single speed and mono only on a Trynos. I love my Set, but ain't noting wrong with a good ole TLD.

i have the single speeds also,no problems with them. We use them for tuna in the canyons and girlfriend loves them because they are much lighter than the 50's and real easy for her to handle.

Sounds to me that you have been making some good reasons to keep your old TLD's. They are pretty much bullet proof and cost less. I work on reels all the time and for the money, and as much abuse that I see is given the TLD 25 by anglers, and especially mates not maintaining or even cleaning them ever, I can still put them back in to good working condition with very little effort or money in parts.

That's funny you said that. I was talking to a buddy of mine and asked him how often he has his rebuilt. He laughed and said there so cheap when I break em I just go get a new one! I've never really had a problem with the TLD's. I think that shimano products are the best out there. After using the tyrnos reels this winter I think that they have a smoother drag than the TLD and I was going to get them this spring.

Are you seeing a lot of problems with the Tyrnos reels?

another point about not using braid. I have seen captains get me down to 1/8 of the line generating a second, 3rd or 4th bite. All the braid out there will cut something off. Guarunteed!

I've seen a few bearing problems and corrosion on the outside plates of the reels causing the plating to flake off, but that was when they first came out. I have not seen that recently. If you are gooing to be throwing away any TLD's send them to me! I can usually repair them with bearings, pre-set knobs, drags and cams for $25 worth of parts and ususlly less than that. Drags are only $3 and bearings are only around $10 or $12. Not counting labor I can't remember whan I have had more that $30 in parts.
