having three professionals like Overboard and Baywolf in the pit and Gottafly at the helm like we did that day was crucial.

don't stop. Maintain speed. The big thing for us is that only one person go to that rod. Everyone else go to another rod. Jig it, speed it up, drop back if it gets hit and then lets go. Just imagine a school of bait fish getting ambushed. They don't keep swiming along like a sunday stroll in the park. The baits shower and scatter all over the place.

Having anglers that know what they were doing probably was a plus too

It has not happened to me but few times in my life. I would say sharp hooks, proper drag, tight spread, swimmin baits, closely matched baits and colors, turning into the bite and keep moving once you get bit.

I don't have near the experience that many people have on here but I think the main thing is a Tight pattern.
I'm still amazed at the number of people that tunafish with a way back or a wwwwback. Way back is a great way to catch schooling fish one at a time.

First you have to be in the right area, next you gotta to be lucky.

Seriously through, aside from you spread and how it is placed, for me the 1 biggest factor is to keep the boat in gear and at the same speed for as long as you can.
DO NOT SLOW THE BOAT DOWN!
Keep your trolling speed going as long as you can. Other that I will sometimes "jig" the line to entice something to his it.

Not sure it helps but it gives me something to do and keeps me from thinking the boat down for a few seconds...

Bobby - I don't really use spectra or Dacro. Spectra or Dacro is recommended on the long riggers and bridge rod to get that kind of action. Or else you are just stretching line.

We have been lucky enough to have a boat that raises em right to the transon. Our long riggers are where most big boats keep their shorts or long shorts. So when we get ambushed everything is tight and stretch is not a real big concern. It works for us at least.

First of all, you need longfin around. Those are the classic culprits involved in the "chinese fire drill".

Keep the boat going! thats a no brainer

Take care of the hooked up rod.

    Now for the other rods.

Usually if i get a knock down and miss i'll immediately throw it into free spool. Sometimes its picked up right there. If not, then i'll start to jig.

That mimics what would happen in a real life feeding frenzy. Baitfish get's hit, escapes, mulls along stunned only to be picked up by another fish.

The jigging is how baitfish reacts when being attacked. They swim in short bursts often at angles. Hence the reason to jig. With any rod NOT whacked initially...jig.

You really want to make it interesting...have a jig rod ready with a butterfly jig or popper. Soon as more then one rod goes off cast that sucker back in the wake, jig/pop the hell out of it, and hold on.

Sometimes you have to. I know days where it's made all the difference. Hell, our last trip we fished 7 rods. 6 in normal range, one wwwb. Which one got hammered? The wwwb. Only rod to get hit all day. the way i see it is that not every fish in the ocean is going to fall for our "natural presentation" 6 lures swimming all in perfect formation behind the loud vroom vroom fish that doesn't belong. As it is fish head for the depths on the hook when they see the boat.

Wait, here comes a lonely soldier trudging along all by his lonesome. Out of the white water, clearly visible, quiet. Perfect for an ambush attack from below. Bam...there is your hookup on the wwwb

You are right though...for multiples it doesn't work. When it's slow however, that might be only thing saving your trip.

Question, I read somewhere about turning the boat sharply to one side after the first hook up to rattle the baits I guess. Does any one have experience with doing that. Has that worked for anyone? I have personally never done that, just keep the boat straight.
