    Live Baiting at the Stone

I know that im not the only one that has done it......But on Charters the only time that we live bait is in the fall for the kings. Now fun fishing we have been to the Big Rock in a 23 proline single 250 yamaha 40gal livewell with 30 Shad it was the week before the Swansbro tournament last year looking for the big kings.........Well we found the kings 10/15lber not the big ones but what we did find was the yft love the shad the #6wire and #4 VMCTrbs dont work on them as well as the kings.I know we hook over 10 yft and only got 2 to the boat.Hell I would love to have a 40gal livewell with the fatbacks,But theres only a few Captain that will even think about livebaiting or know how to live bait here.

Sep 06 at the Atlas Tanker (East side of Cape Lookout shoals in 120') slow trolling live pinfish (couldn't find menhaden to save our lives) on your typical livebait rigs we had two serious strikes and subsequent first runs. Holey moley, two kings of all kings. 10 minutes later, well maybe not. Maybe two AJs of all AJs. Well maybe not either. Lost one at the 15 min mark and finally saw the other a few minutes later. What the hell?!?!?!?! 30lb YFT!!! Slow trolling pinfish on 12lb gear. Weird! Really weird!

This has absolutely nothing to do with this thread but EMTAE brought it back.

My buddy Davis has a livewell built in but we also hook a 50Gal drum to the saltwater wash down and let a hose overflow over the coverboard. It keeps Bunker,Spot,Croaker and Pinfish alive all day long.Last summer we even caught some Sardines alive for 8 hours.

really awsome thread, my only two cents would be, every time that we would slow the boat 2knots to make my turn- bang we would get slammed. i really think that if the fish is following your spread, when you make eratic movements then it must look like the bait just figured out they were dinner and split. at that moment we would always get a strike

Went out and jigged up some live cigars to do some king live baiting the seas were so slick we went out past the 90' drop threw out a sea anchor and slowed drifted in late June. Every now and than we would throw over any dead cigars, seemed every time we did this we would get bit. When we got the first one up we could not believe our eyes, a nice 30lb Yellowfin in 82 degree water, this went on for about an hour and 4 nice yellows in the box. The talk on the radio that day was that it was dead out there, man were we . The only thing I don’t like about live bait is you can’t cover as much ground but when you are on the fish nothing works better.

Hey Capt Michael...did you ever hear of or try running your leader thru a broken-off lobster antenna, then attaching a hook and burying it in a nice, small piece of lobster meat, then pulling it back so the hook eye goes into the antenna (hook goes on the bottom, or fat end) and then pinning it with a round toothpick at the top end? Man, I used to just MURDER them city slicker mangroves with the lure and bait PHD's doing that!

And then there are those dock snook. I sure know one of the few ways to snooker those critters too. Goodgoshamighty, do some of them get humongous down south!
