Seabiscuit Report 9/22---My Initiation, A Couple of Broken Spirits, and Sweet Revenge

Yesterday I had the pleasure of joining the one and only Biscoto for our first trip together aboard the Contender. Slid through the jetty walls and was greeted with a little residual swell from the blow days before----nothing major and gave us a decent ride out.
On the way, Nick busts out a bag full of hot Hardee's biscuits and insists that I eat one so that I can bulk up real quick for our first stop---inshore gags. (Apparently I'm a bit on the skinny side! Ha ha!)
Just before our first stop, we stopped on a mark and dropped down the jig rigs to make bait. A well full of liveys came mighty quick and we made the final couple mile run to our first hole.
Before the anchor was dropped, we decided to jig a few more baits here just for good measure. My first drop no more than hit the bottom before I felt them tugging. Got the load a couple feet of the bottom and it took off! Snap! One sabiki gone. Next drop---same scenario. Looks like the gags are here and hungry! So much for bait, it's time to get anchored.
Once we were anchored, it didn't take long. Nick boats a shorty on his first drop and I immediately get SLAMMED! Got the fish a few feet off the bottom before he flipped me the bird and went back to the rocks. Ok, so maybe I need to eat a few more biscuits......Our next few drops ended in a couple more shorties and a couple more broken leaders on my end. So with two broken spirits and nothing to show for it in the box, we slid on offshore.
Ran over a nice mark on the way and decided to anchor and drop down. Nick was once again first with a nice puddin' head. It didn't take me long to catch up and somewhat redeem myself with a puddin' of my own. A few minutes later, another puddin' for Nick and a respectable gag for myself. With a decent start, we decided to pull the anchor and find a new spot. (Oh, I forgot to mention that the Biscoto had something on his mind this morning---he wanted a Scamp!)
In a couple more miles, ran over another scratch and once again was rewarded with a pair of puddin's and a gag, but still no scamp.
Another stop and it was more of the same. By now we had 3 gags and 6 puddin's.....one more stop to finish out the limit.
On our way to another spot, we run across a nice patch of bottom. Decide to drift and see if there's anything there. Nick drops first and his sinker no more than hit bottom when he rared back on a nice fish. He gets him off the bottom and his 130 lb. leader parted! Knowing there was a nice crop of fish here (and quite a bit of current), he made the call to drop anchor and get our revenge on him---and revenge we got. Anchored right on the spot and we both drop liveys down. Mine gets nervous then gets demolished. The fish fought like a gag but ended up being a really nice, fat puddin'. And in fact, it had Nick's minnow still in it's mouth from just minutes before! We told him we would be back for revenge and gave him fair warning but he didn't want to listen.
Ok, so the grouper limit is done but it's such a nice day (the ocean really slicked up) we didn't want to leave yet. Just like any professional athlete needs a short jog/walk for a cool down after their workout, the Biscoto needs his cool down as well, so we decided to move a couple of miles to one of Nick's spots for a little b-liner/triggerfish action.
On our way, we ran across a broken weedline and noticed a disturbance then a school of mahi's under it. Slowed the boat and watched as SEVERAL HUNDRED GAFFERS hovered beneath the boat. Cut up some squid and tried to feed them but they wanted no part of it. It's so frustrating when this happens!
Ok, ok ok.......maybe they weren't gaffers and more like flip-flops. And maaybe there wasn't several hundred of them and only about a hundred. And maaaaybe they were a little hungry and ate most everything we threw out. And maaaaaaybe we caught and released one or two of them just to have some fun.
So yeah, we fed them for a while--just watching the majority of the time as a hundred of the ocean's most colorful fish swarmed below us.
Enough fun, it's time for the cooldown....After a couple of pinkys, the first nice b-liner came over the gunnel. Ok, here is where we park. Got anchored again and it was on----Red Hot Chili Peppers rocking loud on the radio and b-liner after b-liner into the cooler. Nice ones at that---16-17" fish. In the middle of this, Nick finally gets his scamp. Since we were at our limit he went back to see another day. Just when we got going good the grunts moved in on us and took over.
Ended the day with a relaxing ride home, making it just before the storms moved in.
Nick, I can't thank you enough for an awesome day on the water! I had a great time and hopefully we can do it again very soon! You are welcome to go with me anytime as well!

Awesome report and pics Squid. Looks like you all put a hurtin on em yesterday. Congratulations to you and Biscoto. I don't think the new Seabiscuit has come back without limits yet. Hope the streak continues forever. Slip.

    Captain Squid,
it was a real pleasure having you on board. Good job handling the goobers, and way to write a report man.
Now, if only I could get you to eat a few more biscuits.....
