    Seabiscuit Report---1/6....Squids and a Biscuit

After being gone for the past month and watching everyone pound on the bluefins, groupers, wahoos, and lord knows what else I was dying to get back on the water. Just so happens that my girlfriend, Andrea (aka "Miss Squid") was in town for New Year's and decided to stay a couple more days in order to get a day or two of fishing in. (Gotta love a girl that BEGS to go fishing! ) Well she's been wanting to catch a grouper and a wahoo so I felt it my job to put her on them. So on Saturday we loaded up a friend's 32' Seacraft to head to the stream on a wahoo mission. At 30 miles, we pulled the throttles back in order to thaw some baits however one of the motors wouldn't throttle all the way down and was stuck at 1500 rpms. With this being the case and not being able to slow down to less than 4.5 knots, we made the call to cancel the stream run since it would be nearly impossible to fight a wahoo at almost 5 knots. So we cut the problem motor off and made a day of bottom fishing catching plenty of beeliners and a grouper or two around 30 miles. Made for a long trip home (on one motor) but still a great day.

On Sunday, myself and "Miss Squid" had an invite from the world famous Seabiscuit to do some more bottom bouncing and hopefully get Andrea her first grouper. As customary, I showed up with a bag full of steaming biscuits and off we went onto a very nice ocean. There were a few showers off on the horizon that chopped the ocean a bit however it was no match for the Contender. Made bait around 30 miles and headed on offshore a few more miles to the first spot. I remembered the area well since it was where Nick took me on our first trip together.
It didn't take long for Nick to score on the first gwoopah of the day...a very respectable puddin'. Anchored up but no more wanted to play. On to the second spot and you guessed it.....up comes another goober the fell death to the Biscuit. Anchored up again and it wasn't long before "Miss Squid" understood what I meant when I said that a grouper will "whoop your ass". She bowed up on her first fish and after a very short struggle and a few choice words a nice red laid on the deck and she was posing for pictures!
Not long after this, she got a taste for the good ol' reef donkey. Nick bowed up with the first one....a "nice" 30 pounder. A few minutes later, Andrea thinks she has a grouper bite and drills him....however this is no grouper. She gets him a few feet off the bottom and he starts bulldogging her and peeling drag. A grueling 5 minutes of tug-o-war resulted in the leader parting and the donkey swimming free. (The fight did prove to be quite comical for myself, Biscuit, and Nick's buddy Paul who was watching this take place on another boat. )
The same story played out much of the day as we had to work very hard for the bites that we got and I got my ass handed to me by the Biscuit and Andrea. In between the grouper bites we managed some very nice beeliners (up to 4 lbs), a couple of triggers, the "endangered" pinkies, jumbo seabass, as well as a few slimeys on the light line.
Ended the day with a VERY slick ride home right after sunset.

As always, it was an absolute pleasure fishing with you, Nick. I cannot thank you enough for allowing myself and Andrea to go with you and hope that we can do it again soon! Like you said, we definitely have some unfinished business out there......

Very nice report captain Squid. Thank you.
Having you and Andrea join me on Sunday was a treat. She is a special girl, deadly with the stick and a joy to be around.
Paul couldn't stop talking about watching her put the brakes on that donkey while wedged against the console. Good stuff!
Look forward to having you two on board again soon!

I have been patiently waiting for the report as I knew you were heading off Sunday with Biscuit and the Beauty. I also knew you guys would have a great trip weather permitting. But never would I have guessed that I would fall off my computer chair laughing at a Grouper pic. The above picture is hilarious. I am tickled you guys had a fine day. Congrats and thanks for sharing the great report.

Here's one more pic of myself and "Miss Squid"......or as Sir Biscuit would say "The Lovebirds" with one of the 3 puddin' heads she put on the deck.
