SeaBiscuit fishing report Sept. 3 & 4
Sunday Sept. 3
I must have lost my mind! Yesterday, Sept. 3, I packed the cooler full of mountain dew and pepsi, loaded up on beef jerky and fig newtons and took 4 kids and a dad fishing.
Member Brandon was kind enough to join my 11 year old Jason (Lil' Biscuit) and me for an early launch (to avoid the ramp madness) and bait run. We soon had a couple hundred finger mullets in the live well. The plan was to go looking for a little early season near shore black sea bass on jigs and fall back on live bait only if needed.
Around 8, my party showed up. Flip flops, Ipods and a sack of biscuits in tow they gave me the signal that it was time to go kill something.
The bass did not cooperate, or rather were not interested in eating metal this day. I had levelwinds (with braid) set up for vertical jigging and spinning rods (mono) for live bait bottom fishing. I made the mistake of catching a flounder on bait using a levelwind and my very observative crew decided that they too had to fish levelwinds with live bait and wanted to cast them far far away from the boat! OMG! Never in my life have I been trapped like that on my own boat. There are kids sleeping on the bow, peeing on the motors and generally being exactly where I needed to go myself to keep them fishing. I was getting myself all worked up between working out bird's nests, tying rigs and stepping on soda cans, tshirts, sunglass cases and assorted other "debris".
Just as I realized that the job of a fishing guide has to be the toughest on this earth, the good Lord took pity on me. The kids started catching some fish!
Lil' biscuit got the ball rolling with a keeper flounder. Pardon the gaff, I left the net home.

The bite was not hot, but a sea bass here and a flounder there with a lizard fish or blue thrown in kept the lines tight and the kids smiling.
The dad (my good friend Bryan) got in the action with a nice sea bass or two.

By midday we had gone through $ 20 of fluorocarbon leader, $ 10 of hooks, 5lbs of lead, all the mountain dew and most of the bait! There was 20 minnows or so left in the well and only a few sea bass and flounder on ice. The final stop graced us with 5 more nice flounder and a few "sassy" little gag groupers that pulled hard and made the kids smile again.
14 year old Blake with his first gag grouper ever (released, of course)

With enough fish for a couple of meals, no more live bait and tender cheeks turning rosy in the sun, we headed home early in the afternoon. The cold Miller lite I had upon delivering the children to the care of my wife, was one of the best ever!
Monday Sept. 4
My hands, feet and brain were sore when I got up this morning. I was proud of myself for having survived yesterday's adventure. I was also thinking about that last stop, where the fish seemed to be stacked up and hungry.
When Slip Slidin called to inform me that he was gonna pass on shooting doves this afternoon (smart call, since it was 87 with 95% humidity!) and wanted to go catch a flounder instead, I allowed myself to be talked into it.
Nick's neighbor Dennis joined us and off we went to see if the fish were still where I left them yesterday.
Slip Slidin was on fire early on catching the first 3 keepers and this beauty of an oyster toad! Note the coloration!

Not long after settling on our fishing spot, this bird decided he wanted to hang out with us. in the beginning he stayed on the T top, but eventually he joined us on deck and proceeded to strut around like he owned the joint.

He pooped three different places, turned his nose up to the offered fresh finger mullet and walked everywhere making sure to fall in the live well, each and every time he walked by it! This little fellow was banded on one leg. He seemed oblivious to the fact that he was hanging out with people! He may have been one of those "nursed back to health" projects for some well intended local naturalist. But I have to say that for all the love (and possibly tax dollars) that went into "treating" this fellow his body healed just right, but his brain was definitely on the slow side! After more than an hour making a fool of himself, I finally grabbed him and tossed him up in the air. He flew away smartly, only to go land on the only other boat within sight of us!
The flounder fishing was not red hot, but we scratched out a decent catch and enjoyed a very nice evening ride back to the dock

Good day on the water. Thanks Slip Slidin!

no worries on the dove hunt Slip....Brandon happily filled in for you. we killed more doves than you guys caught flounders though
!
nice catch my friends.
was the band on the bird an aluminum band like they band waterfowl with or otherwise? if it was a fed band, you could have written down the numbers and called the lab and gotten the story behind the little guy. i found a dead brown pelican at the ocean isle beach boat ramp a couple summers ago and called in the number. he was banded 8 years before on a spoil island south of wanchese as a hatchling, too young to fly.

Thats just -plain ol fabulous fun fishin you're talkin there. I envy you. I sat here in the rain for the last couple days. Too wet even to hunt. I'm gettin my annual "solo sword" feeling cooking and it may well be in the next couple days that I do it. Though it sounds exciting, I'd gladly take days like you had in a blink. Good work my friend and keep up comming...
