Big K (Triangler) showed up in the Cape Fear region with a desperate need to breath salt air. One of his Carolina blue Southport's black beauties went under the weather while fueling up late Friday, so plans were changed and the Biscuit skiff was happy to oblige.
Matt showed up before light with 36 worms ready for the parade and the skiff was launched sporting trolling tackle
10 miles offshore it was apparent that a 60 mile run, although possible, was not going to be pleasant in the NE breeze. We listened in amazement to the weather radio telling us that there was no wind and waves where we were at.
Oh well, let's look for inshore gags and may be it will soon be like the radio said and we'll be able to run then. We found a pack of eager "green" gags (they have a lot more green in their coloration when in shallow water) in 62 feet. Big K had never fished grouper in the shallows. I think he liked it!
We caught several in that first spot including a few small keepers. With the new limits at one per person per day we decided to release all those, hoping for bigger fish later in the day. Big mistake! Working offshore we failed to get a bottom bite going anywhere. A couple of rocked fish told their friends not to bite and by lunch time we headed to the Frying Pan tower to have leftover fried flounder sandwiches and tug on amberjacks.
Afternoon laid down to slickcam. Being too late to run another 30 offshore we kept on looking for that bottom bite which never materialized. A kingfish here and a bailer there kept things bearable, but still very poor. I knew it was time to throw in the towel when young Matthew after much grunting and sweating
got this thing to the surface!
The box ended up with one grouper, 3 sea bass, one king, two bailers and 36 little soldiers all dressed up with no place to go. The wahoos got a break, I feel. So did all fishes for that matter. Paying dues is all that was and I'm ready to get back at them as soon as I get the chance.
In the meantime.....
Life is good!
