Left my house at 5:00 am and met Nick and his son Jason at the boat ramp in Wrightsville beach at 7:30 yesterday morning.
No wind, flat seas and 3 boys ready to yank on some serious lips.
Stopped on the way out and jigged up some fresh bait to offer to the Grouper Gods.
Since the weather was so nice, we decided to run on out a ways to look for some Reds first thing in the morning.
Nicks first drop and he brought up a sexy Red Grouper. After that we caught some B-liners, triggers and Pinky's.
Moved to our next spot and caught some more B-liners and Pinky's. All the sudden Jason starts grunting as he pulls his fish off the bottom. He kept him coming just like his Father taught him. A couple beads of sweat and a minute or two later and Jason lands a 22" American Red Snapper!!!! I believe it was Jasons first one ever, not to mention that Nick had not caught a keeper in 10 years. Needless to say, the Father was very proud of the Son. It was pretty cool to be a part of it.
After the pictures and celebration we got back to work. Caught a couple keeper Red Groupers and a couple chunk backs.
We also caught a couple Gags that got a free boat ride home.
Jason also caught a nice King on the light line that we released.
On to the next spot we go....caught a few more B-liners, Pinkys and Triggers. All the sudden Nick is fighting a monster up from the bottom. A few minutes later Nick lands an awesome Red about 25lbs. It was the biggest one I have ever seen. We also caught a couple Tropical Groupers that we released as well. (I don't remember the name)
We caught a couple more Reds and some more B-liners and Pinky's too.
After that we ran inshore to catch 4 more Gags to fill our limit. After we got anchored up it took about 20 minutes and we had our 4. Jason caught one all by himself. Set the hook, pulled on him for all he was worth to keep him out of the rocks, and cranked him all the way in. AWESOME!!!!!!
Jason is only 12 years old, but he fished like a man. He can pull on them fish like a pro. Nick has taught him very well and Jason has obviously listened and put it to use.
By the time the last fish hit Nicks 162 Quart cooler...we had to sit on the lid to get it to latch. But, once you got off the lid it popped back open. We had our limit of Gags, lots of B-liners and Triggers and probably 7 or 8 Reds. Most of the Groupers we caught were pretty good size. We only had 1 in the box that we had to measure. We never did get a picture of the days final catch....but you get the idea.
What a day it was. Fishing on a beautiful day with great friends. Catching fish was a bonus. But really, with Nick and Jason... those fish did not have a chance.
I had an awesome time. One of the most fun trips I have ever been on. Nick is a try professional fishermen, and I was honored to fish with him and his son aboard the SeaBiscuit.
Thanks so much for an awesome time Nick. I can't wait to do it again.
Way to go Nick. Looks like father and son had an awesome time and it sure was a beautiful day to be on the water.
Kudos on the big Red, very impressive. And that's one nice sized ARS. I may need some "mentoring" on those! Hopefully I'll find one on the end of my line soon.
Great catch as usual and watching the "young one" strain, wind and pull 'em off the bottom makes it all the better!
Great report John. Beautiful day, great company and good fishing.
It is always cool to see and read about a father passing it on. I think
you might know a little sumpin' sumpin' about that.
I havn't seen an American Red that big in a very long time. If Biscuit
senior plays his cards right in a few years you guys will going fishing with
Jason.
AWESOME! I have a feeling the Little Biscuit is gonna grow up doing some serious damage to those bottom dwellers. What a wonderful day it sounds like you guys had on the water. That Puddinhead is ridiculous looking! Great report as we have come to expect from you John, thanks for sharing it. Great fishing as I have learned to expect from the Biscuits as well. I am raring to get down there and chase some Groupers myself! To quote Slip, it looks like "Life is Good" down around Wilmington. Snappa on the coals in the future. Pretty work Captain Nick, pretty friggin work!
WAY TO GET EM LIL'BISCUIT!
