Recently had a screened in porch added to the house so that my sweet wife Jennifer and Tigger the cat can enjoy the outdoors and fresh air without having to worry about being bothered by bugs or other critters. Turns out that Dennis, the builder doing the job, likes to bottom fish and his 12 year old son Alex goes with him every chance he has. It did not take too much thought for Lil' Biscuit and I to invite them to join us for a day in the water. Giving up their creature comforts provided by the XL Grady they run, they hopped on the Biscuit skiff on the hopes that we'd be able to find them a couple of near shore gags.
Cool morning and the kind of sunrise that reminds us to thank God for all our blessings. No wind and a flat calm ocean had us looking bait and fish about 20 miles offshore. Bait was a bit fussy, but the gags were not!
Dennis got the first nice fish of the day, a solid 30 inch gag. He was pleased and somewhat impressed by both the power and size of his catch until on the next drop 12 year old Alex showed him what a real gag looks like:
A solid 20 lb plus fall fish that hit like a freight train and gave the Jr angler all he could handle.
Wind was non existent in the early morning and no anchor course could be established. With 3 nice gags in the box and running short on bait we had to decide to either catch more bait and 3 more gags to make out our limit, or take advantage of the calm conditions and run on a few more miles to chase reds, scamps and snappers. No one was in a hurry to get back to the very crowded Oktoberfest hill, so on we went.
A light north breeze materialized by mid morning and with it the signs of life in the ocean increased dramatically. Bait and little tunny everywhere. Packs of porpoise feeding and turtles gulping air. Clearing light blue water and more flying fish showing than at any time since the big NE blow of 10 days ago. I sensed that the fish would be active and they were.
For the next couple of hours we caught more groupers, some large pinkies and mixed beeliners steady, while the two boys had a blast catching most of about 10 king mackerel that tried us on the light lines. They each got to practice their gaffing on 6 of the kingfish that were too badly hooked to release.
While I hustled working anchor, machines and rigging, Dennis stayed focused on bottom fishing. A few grunts later he too was rewarded with his very own 20 pounder:
Soon the cooler would no longer shut, a sign that it was time to be headed home even though it was just after lunch time
Lil' Biscuit and I were very pleased to have been able to show our friends a good time on the water and send them home with some fresh fish for their family and the construction crews
After cleaning up and stowing the boat and gear the perfect ending for a long, busy day offshore greeted us when we finally entered the house in the evening:
Fall is here. Apples are ripening. The fishes are moving. Life is good.
