SeaBiscuit fishin' report May 31 '09
Does your boat have feelings? Does she ever talk to you about them? Mine sure does. The SeaBiscuit is a good, patient and loyal skiff. She has taken me offshore many times and has always brought me back home safe with enough fresh fish for a couple of dinners for my family and friends. In return, she asks very little. She is not into all that fancy hull waxing & buffing. Does not mind a little dried up splatter on her gel coat. Yamalube, unleaded and a spray of Clorox clean up keep her happy.
The SeaBiscuit boat, however, likes to go fishing. She tells me as much every time I walk by her. A combination of a most blustery spring and a very busy work schedule of late, have conspired to keep SeaBiscuit on her trailer. She waited patiently through most of the past few months, only to see me "running off" with a big black Morehead boat, riding shotgun on the Extreme one or breaking in the very sexy new Slip Slidin.
"Enough is enough" she said yesterday. It was late in the evening and I was dog tired from a long week and a hard running "half day" on the water with Slip. "I expect to be hitched up to the truck and headed for the boat ramp by 4:30 am" she said. Understanding that one must avoid the wrath of a scorn woman at all costs, I simply replied" "yes dear".
Squid has been going hard lately as well, but with the Miss out of town on a family vacation, he was a willing mate. I trust he did not regret his decision to join me today.
Early start at the Wrightsville Beach wildlife ramp, which was already a zoo at 5:15 AM! We took our time eating our breakfast biscuits in the waterway while greeting the rising sun. Boats, armed like lobsters, blew by us in a very big hurry. We looked bait in the waterway (a few small shad) and then again a few miles outside the inlet (jumbo cigar minnows and some pinfish). The plan was an easy day's fishing in the WR4 area. Calm seas and light winds made anchoring in a vicious north to south current "interesting". Thank God the dolphin fish did not so much mind whether we were exactly on the spot or not. They came visiting and Squid was waiting with the spinning rod loaded

I never tire of looking at mahis around the boat.

I like eating them too!

By late morning we had a few dolphin in the box and only a couple of groupers, so I made a move to the south looking for, of all things, a little more wind to help me with the anchor course. No sooner had we settled on our spot within view of Frying Pan Tower and the gags decided it was lunch time:

Good gags:

With one in the box already our limit was filled in less than 5 minutes. Guess which one of the above got a get outa jail free card!
We obviously had to leave these fish and being almost noon we had a decision to make. Call it a day with plenty of meat in the box or hop a few miles offshore to look for some reds and scamps to make out the 5 grouper per person limit. Seeing how the live well was still full of primos, off a few miles we went. The bite remained strong with mixed large black sea bass, small scamps and jumbo gags. We ended up releasing a lot more gags than we kept, but we also found some better scamps:

Squid was proud of these two:

In between catching groupers we were treated to a show by a pod of friendly porpoise and had a large sunfish become enamored with Squid. She stuck around the boat for at least 15 minutes while Squid was huffing and puffing fighting what ended up being a very large dusky on the light line. Some folks think that manatees are responsible for the legend of mermaids, but for sheer good looks and svelte figure a manatee does not hold a candle to a mola-mola
back on the hill by 5 PM we off loaded at Slip's and shared a very cold beer to celebrate the day's blessings:

Sorry it had been so long SeaBiscuit and thanks for not holding a grudge.

Hide- My Wifes Logged On
I have to admit, even though I was enjoying my cousin's California wedding, when I got that text from Squid when you all were 5 miles out...I was jealous
And, having to wait to read the report and talk to Squid hours later to get the scoop, killed me.
Soooo glad the Seabiscuit was able to take care of the men in her life!!
You boys did me proud
We'll see if I can hitch a ride of my own in Hawaii to find a beautiful 'Blue', otherwise I can say I'm more than happy to get back to the Carolina waters w/my boys in a couple weeks.
Go team "Seabiscuit"!

One always has to wonder while reading your posts if you're more talented at this fish game or at the way you bring it to us...Wonderful!
Nick I'm glad that faithful Seabiscuit got to bring you guys out yesterday... She's lucky to have a Capt that knows exactly where and how to anchor to feed her some of the Best the ocean has to give!
The boys complained all weekend about being stuck this report is only going to add to their agony!
As Lee says, tell the other brother Nick we're still waiting on a report of the new slip slidin...
