    SeaBiscuit Fishin' Report---June 13, 2009

This morning myself, Miss Squid, and Matt (JMS-ILM) joined Nick on the "skiff" for a short day grouper trip. Started out a bit breezy so we eased down the waterway to find some bait which didn't take long.

On the way offshore marked a ledge a mere 14 miles off the beach that was stacked up with bait. Turn around and realize that there's also gag marks there.

Anchored on the ledge to no avail right off the bat. A school of jacks decided to visit the boat and Nick thought that Miss Squid needed to catch one. While she was fighting this fish, Matt decides that he wants to pull on one (for some unknown reason) so he butt hooks a bait and lets him swim towards the bottom. Well apparently he made it all the way to the bottom--I look over to see him doubled up with what ends up being the first keeper gag of the day.

After her "prized catch" was given a proper release (a backflip back into the water), the four of us bomb the ledge with 12 oz. sinkers. My bait starts to get nervous then gets slammed. Keeper #2 on the deck.

Then guess who had to show us all up and catch the biggest one-----Miss Squid!

When it was said and done, 3 keepers and several shorts off this spot. Pretty decent find in 65 feet of water.

Made several more stops a few more miles offshore but couldn't ever get the bite to fire up. Matt managed another keeper for the cooler and got us halfway to our limit.

After a little homemade grouper salad and cracker lunch, we decided to make one more stop before calling it a day---after all this was supposed to be a short, easy day.

About 500 feet before the mark, Matt spots something cruising on top of the water. "That's something brown----that's a cobia!" Cut up some cigars and threw some live shad at him but couldn't get him to eat. I found our last live cigar---nothing. Finally tie on a bucktail and Matt tips it with a piece of bait.

(Can you find the cobia in the pic?)

Well he FINALLY eats the bucktail! While he's doing battle, Miss Squid spots a mahi on the other side of the boat that has heard the commotion and came to check it out. Well he wasn't nearly as smart as the cobia and Miss Squid was quick to hook up on the spinning rod.

    Doubled up:

Check out the cobia on the right side of the picture about to die

    Oh yeah:

After the interlude, we get back to our spot. I set the light line before dropping my line to the bottom. Wasn't even able to get it in the rod holder before it goes off.....12 lb. mercury missle. Rebait and Matt has the same story.....another 12 pounder. Nothing much happening here either on the bottom so it was a few more crackers with grouper salad and some good tunes. One of us even decided to take the first dip in the ocean for 2009:

    Can you say "soggy biscuit"?

    Bow shot:

    Cobia facial:

Came home early and met up with a familiar face in the backside of the inlet. Good to see you again, Kevin. Thanks Nick for another awesome day on the water filled with plenty of laughs!

Now that's some fine June fishing on the 'Biscuit. It's like the Cobia and Mahi knew they didn't stand a chance with the "skiff" on the water armed with "fishing pirates"and offered themselves up for the taking! And the Gags just wanted that last meal before the ride to the heavens! Great report and pic's.
On a side note, I dropped 10 diver's off on the School House wreck this morning and as I watched them descend onto the wreck the surface filled with Cobia so thick you could walk on them. Watched 3 boats hook up and thank me for "stirring the pot" for them. Must have been 2 schools about a half dozen or so thick.
June fishing is one the the best months here in the Carolina's and it's on fire right now!
