SeaBiscuit fishin' report jan 4, 08

The only good thing about dang cold weather is that the ice doesn't melt. It's been cold these last couple of days. Dang cold!
Slip called me last night begging me to take him fishing today. His boat is up on the lift but the lift motors are disconnected from their power supply and the electricians couldn't figure out how to connect them! How's that for a predicament?
Low twenties this morning had me second guessing being a nice guy. Mucho frio! By mid morning the temps had increased to a balmy 30 degrees and was predicted to warm up into the 40s. Hadn't been sea bass fishing yet this season, so what the heck!
Fishing by 1:00 PM 5 miles offshore in 52 degree 2-3 foot seas and calming. Jigging 2 to 3 oz silver and pink jigs we had a steady pick of keeper BSBs with a couple of togs mixed in. We avoid fishing bait this time of year to keep the dogfish (yes Shoefish, those same endangered spiny dogs!) off, but sooner or later those scavengers get attracted to the bass upchuck and start eating jigs too! Time to move off a bit to warmer water. Worked another couple of spots a little further off (63.5 degrees at 20 miles or so) caught some jumbos a couple of pinkies and a lone beeliner and came home with 30 small to medium mixed bottom fish

Sorry no camera on the boat today

Brother Slip, thanks for talking me into it. Jiggin' bass sure is fun! Good warm up for the rest of this calm and warming weekend.

    Cheers,

Awesome spread of fish! Just curious, how do you cook those BSB and what do they taste like? Similar to snapper?

Green again! Those are some jumbos for sure! Way to go brothers Nick! A few of those SeaBass have awfully big lips! I can almost smell the rascals cooking over the coals from here! Life is Good, eh.

Howdy tankerfly. You can cook sea bass just about any way possible and they are delicious. White, mild and flaky. They tend to fillet "small" relative to their size, so a lot of folks like to cook them whole. A search on the grilling and chilling forum will give you some great ideas.
