SeaBiscuit fishin' report Dec. 30, '08
Last night was restless. No particular reason. Around 5 AM I finally gave up on sleep, got a cup of coffee and fired up the computer to check on the offshore buoys. Northwest at 15 gusting to 19 was uncool to say the least. NOAA and the reefcast still predicted the wind going west and laying down. NW keeps it calm nearshore, for the first few miles anyway, so I resisted the urge to call off the trip and readied the skiff for what I felt was, at best, 50/50 chance of getting to the fish.
Good thing I did too, because I can't imagine disappointing my crew for today:
Redneck Diamond Dave

and his lovely mate, the Russian chick from the 007 movies!

With Matt at the helm we worked a few miles offshore in sloppy and confused seas. Decent swell from the Southeast and building chop from the west made for slow going, so I decided to look gags and bass and wait for the weather to lay a bit. We found a few of both (bass and gags) but nothing to get excited over. Each spot would give us a few minutes of fishing before the winter sharks moved in much to Diamond Dave's chagrin!
I kept moving offshore a couple of miles at the time, looking for a good bite that just did not seem to exist. By early afternoon the weather had laid and I started getting impatient, thinking that if I was to move another 10-15 miles offshore I might find an "easier" bite. Each time I put the boat on plane, however, I saw good bottom and bait marks, so I kept pounding it until......... it happened!

Miss Squid broke out the chocolates and all hell broke loose!
Squid got his very first ever keeper ARS

and then....

Matt soon followed suit

Not to be outdone, Miss Squid demonstrated proper "clean and jerk" lifting technique on a piglet of her own

A little "leg assist"

Triumph!

Even the captain got lucky!

In about half an hour or so the box went from nearly empty to:

How many times have you heard: "they got to eat sooner or later". Truer words have never been spoken.
Cheers & Happy New Year everyone!

Anthony's Ark is a blowboater
those American red snappers are beginning to make a regular appearance on your boat, could it be that you are building a database of ARS numbers? That sequence of Miss Squid hoisting her fish for the photo was priceless. Great report and some nice fish in the boat for the gang
