Just throw the shit away and tie or buy a new one when they crap out. A witch is good for 1 maybe 2 days--- they cost less than $1 to make and less than $5 to buy.
As far as tangling while trolling, most store bought witches have way too much hair and can snarl up--- perhaps this could be the problem.

make sure the hair is even. i use a comb to get knots out and untangle it. and Glenn W i had most of my witches last all season last year. i caught 6 bluefins on 1 in 7 different trips. if they are tied and glued good they will hold.
