Got a call from my buddy Jon Lucas Saturday afternoon about a hot cobia bite off Cape Lookout. Sunday looked fishable and since I haven't been out in a while decided to drag the skiff down that night to meet up since the center console has been in the shop. Set out from Anchorage Marina at 6:00am Sunday morning and were greeted by SW winds blowing a little harder than anticipated. The original plan was to cruise the beach and look for fish to site cast on then bait fish when the tide got right. With the wind stirring up the ocean we decided we didn't want to take a pounding that would make Paris Hilton proud and cruised to Lookout the back way. Get to Lookout and find beautiful conditions and a bunch of other boats with the same idea as ours. Got anchored up and it was dog shark madness. About 8:30 we got our first good bite and quickly put a nice 38" fish in the boat. Finished the day 1 of 4 with 3 pull offs and probably 100 dogsharks released. All fish were hooked on whole fresh pogies on fishfinder rigs. When we finally cleaned the fish at Anchorage we found about thirty silver dollar sized blue crabs in his stomach and the one lone pogy that helped him meet his maker. All in all, a nice way to end a weekend with good friends and great fishing.
YOU CERTAINLY EARNED THAT ONE BRO....PARKING LOT OF BOATS AND THE DOG ATTACK!....YOU WOULD THINK THAT ONE DAY THE DOGS WOULD BECOME GUN SHY AND NOT BITE
Honestly I found that to be the hardest thing about fishing for cobia at CALO. Just weeding thru all of the dogs. I was hoping I could relax a little and reorganize my boat while waiting for a cobia to bite. Oh well.
