Scratching the itch at lunch on Tuesday

Well Tuesday I got up and went to work like most other days - land-locked here in the Triangle. Around 11:30 I left and spooled through the local drivethrough window to pick up a sammich when a strange thing happened. Whether it was the cellphone message that a marathon meeting after lunch was postponed, or echoes of the big rock radio feed, or reports of talking boats, when I came out of the drive through, my car was headed east and it just kept on heading. Hey - the boat keys and some spare clothes were in the trunk, sammich and diet Pepsi in hand, I turned off the AC, cranked down the windows and set the cruise on 78 down I-40 east. I needed to smell some saltwater - and right now. Spent a couple hours rinsing the dust off my rig and taking in the sights, sounds and smells at the marina - ahhhh - then headed out to run her for a spell before returning to responsible adulthood. My u-turn point was the sea bouy at Masonboro inlet where I spotted bait balls with fatbacks pushed up so tight it looked like you could walk on them. Let's take a closer look. (Is it possible I'm actually going to catch a fish on this crazy mental health day?) I grabbed the spinning rod I keep on board just in case and HECK YEAH - the edges were covered up with snapper blues. A quick half dozen of these pound for pound top fighters and I AM HEALED! On the way back to the dock, I did catch a glimpse of a sexy stealthy UFO (unidentified fishing outfit) "slip"ing by. Holy cow. Was that thing floating or flying? Sitting still or trimmed out? Hard to tell - but mighty sleek, I'll say. Wednesday morning back to work as usual - with my itch fully scratched by a few 2 pound bluefish. Who'd a thunk it?

Man - it's Good to be alive.
