We had an interesting time out of Wachapreague on Saturday morning. I was fishing with friends and some new ones on a 36 Jersey.
Well, we got to the boat on Friday night and were greeted by the owner who informed us that the AC is broken, the freshwater pump is broken, the head will not evacuate properly and the fridge doesn't work. Other than that, all is good!!!
Well, after exchanging glances and humming the theme to Gilligans island, we tried to turn in for the night. The guy sleeping on the floor next to me wasted no time falling asleep and for the next 5 hours, he did a pretty darn good imitation of a Huskvarna weed wacker that would not start!!! 85 degrees at midnight, no air moving, laying there sweating and about 4000 mosquito's luring outside the window to the salon. So, at 2am, I decided to head for the truck. It was still packed so I couldn't get into the back and "spread out" so I hit the driver seat. Tried about 100 different positions and couldn't find the "One" so at 3:30, I gave up and went back to the sauna. Huskvarna was still going strong but still in the "trying to start" phase. I think I finally fell asleep, just in time for the other 2 members of the trip to show up at 5!!! Oh well.
So, we load up and head east. We hit the Norfolk and Washington and had no joy. Plenty of good marks at the Washington between 30-40' but nothing would come up to investigate. We tried every combination available but nothing was the magic lure. After 6 hours of trolling, we finally got a solid attack of the cedar plugs on the left long. After a quick fight, we released a 36" BFT. It was Crissy's first tuna so she was all excited.
So, by now we are nearing 1:30. I took over the helm and began trolling our way to the 26 mile hill. We had solid marks throughout the entire way but they were well scattered and down 40'. So, since I had the wheel, I yelled down for them to put some weight on the short outrigger lines and if the fish won't come to us, we will go to them!! So, trolling to the 26 mile hill, we took a solid hit on the left short and we were off to the races...........Finally. After a good fight we landed a solid 55" BFT. All were happy on the boat and it made a long night and day well worth it.
I wishI had more to report, but thats all I got. All fish were traveling alone. No schools were seen all day. One here, one there. They were solid marks on the screen, but nothing bunched up. Good bait marks were also seen all day.
