Left the dock at 6 a.m with a full tray of baits rigged in the standard fall killing colors. Little bit of NE wind but not bad at all. Crisp fall air on my face donning my toasty warm Grundens Fleece jacket, coupled with an ice cold Mt dew plus having a right whale breach beside the boat made for a nice way to start a gorgeous morning heading offshore.
Put lines in 2 1/2 hours later in the mid 400's in 30 fathoms on a nice edge 73.3 on one side and 77.5 on the other bout 1 1/2 knots of backing current and flyers busting regularly.
Worked offshore and south to 40 fathoms. 15 minutes later the left long rigger comes tight. 30 lb wahoo dead in the box. Worked out to 60 fathoms and 81 degree water and made our way down to approx the low 400s. Looked real fishy, marking bait the whole way and turning on top of it to try to get a bite. Stayed here for the better half of the day trying to pound it out. A few knockdowns and a missed fish on the long line, that was it.
Started the turn back northwest and into 30 fathoms then back out to 40 fathoms. Zig zagged until we hit the high 400s and started to put some 8 to 12 lb blackfins in the box the last 2 hours of the day. We had to weed through the small blackfin bites to get these fish. Long drops, clicker off yielded bent poles.
Had to work hard for it Saturday. But slow is better than nothing. The boat owner and his friend were very happy to have some good eats. That is what mattered most to me that day.
Total was 1 wahoo and 4 blackfins. Outstanding ride back in with calm seas and 42 knots!
