Jim ain't nothing wrong with an alien. I like those and the mini agitator's from Eye catcher for the same type of setup.
Marty,
Your #3 position happened like this for me last year (Dead of Summer, Blue Marlin were around in good numbers).
I put split bills on my flats and a naked skipper and sea witch bally on my longs (thinking of Whitey). Short riggers were a large squid chain with a Black hole/Horse (teaser but with a hook bait) and the other short was a Wide Range. Had a blue/white flasher with a horse on my long middle rod and I figure I'll put a Blue/White sailure with a med. on my short middle position (I normally run a bar here when tuna fishing) thinking it would be a "pot luck" lure and low and behold, we come across the 50f line and KA-BOOM...Blue Marlin ignores the three large lures and wails that short bait. Of course, it was a 40 class rod and a regular 50 with 150 pound test leader and it killed us for about a minute then got bill wrapped and chafed through my leader.
Moral of the story, with that lure in that position (not clipped down and popping a lot) looks hot and it caught that Blue's eye even though I had bigger stuff out there.
So great point...and for sure I love Sailures...and Sea Stars. both can be run in any position and are great lures for everything out there.
Glenn
aliens are pretty hot. I've fished quite a few of those buggers. I like the mylar skirts...believe it or not I used to catch a fair amount of hooskies on the silver mylar aliens right on top in the short-long rigger position (position depends on boat, angle of pull, and sea conditions...whatever it took to get the lure to run correctly).
The aliens are an economical alternative.

1.....SHORT RIGGER...IN TIGHT...ALLOWING THE HEAD TO MAKE THE ROOSTER TAIL POP IT IS DESIGNED TO DO...NATURALLY A MED HOO IS IMPLANTED WITHIN THE CONFINES
2.....NEXT, ON THE BACK END OF ANY STYLE DAISEY CHAIN TEASER LOCATED OFF THE RIGGERS AND BRIDLED WITH LARGE/AND OR /HORSE BALLYHOO....BE READY WITH A PITCHBAIT
3.....FLAT LINE.......FISH IT OFF THE RODTIP USING NO RELEASE CLIP...MAINLINE / LEADER OUT OF THE WATER...IN TIGHT....AND DON'T BE AFRAID TO SWIM IT IN THE BACKSIDE OF THE PROP WASH
Box,
Are rigging your hoos with or without weights ?
Thanks,
