We have been waiting for this trip for a few months now, hoping the weather would corporate and hoping that we could put some Hoo’s in the Box.
Friday I get word that Capt Brian wants to leave earlier than normal if we can get the gang down to the dock early. After a few calls everyone gives the thumbs up for a 0430 departure. Capt Brain had said that his plan was to push a little further from home than normal to see if he could put us on a hot bite.
So Sat morning at 0423 the Run Off pulls out of the slip and off we go. It was a great ride out to smooth seas and a bright full moon. I was kind of wondering how the Run Off rode in smooth weather, because it seems every time I’m on it the weather is a little on the rough side (it has never prevented plenty of fish from coming aboard though).
So right before sunrise Capt Brian pulls back we start setting the spread. I’ll tell you what, Capt Brian put us right in the middle of the Wahoo breakfast buffet. We had 3 bites in the first 15 minutes unfortunately we couldn’t convert those bites to meat in the box. After a little while and a few more bites we finally manage to convert a bite to meat in the box, a nice 25-30lbs Hoo. A little while after that Capt Brian hooks a real nice fish on the bridge pole and he meets steel est. about 60lbs. I was thinking I was the back-up gaff man, in the video you hear Marty letting me know that I’ve just moved up to the first shot since he had his hands wrapped in wire, you can also hear Capt Brian urging us to get him in the boat. We manage a small King then it slows down for a while. About noon we have 3 or 4 rods go down in short order, with 2 coming tight I’m thinking Black Fin or False Albies until one jumps. Boys and girls we have a double Sailfish hook-up we manage to get good releases on both. I think we had one or two more bites before it was time to take the ride home.
Overall it was a great day on the water with friends in beautiful weather. Capt Brian and Box as always did their best to put us on fish and capitalize on as many bites as possible. We just seemed to have some bad luck keeping those good bites on, I’ll tell you what if we would have batted .500 we would have had a butt load of meat on the boat. As it stood we had 2 nice Hoo’s, one was very nice, a King and a double on Sails. I don’t know about anyone else, but in my book that’s a good day on the water.
On the way in the gang decided to do the Mahi mayhem on the Run Off like we did last May, so now the countdown starts till we board the Run Off again for some more blood spilling.
I wish I could have made the Challenge, but I’ll be pulling for team Run Off and hoping they can put a couple like our big one or bigger on the boat. If they do I think they would have a good chance to be in the running for some cash.
Thanks Capt Brian and Marty for a great day on the water.
There he is cleaning fish again! I'm going to have to renegotiate my deal. When I get back to the docks he unloads a truck load of meat and tells me to "have fun"
Ponce, I was looking forward to this report. Thanks for sharing and those saildog pictures are beautiful. I hope to show off a few photos myself come November.
