We had an unbelievable day aboard the Run Off this past Saturday!!! I chartered the boat with my brother and 4 guys that are going to be in his wedding this fall. We had an awesome low country boil capped off by a late night booze cruize friday night before turning in to catch a little sleep before our 5 am departure.
Before I go into the trip itself let me set the stage a little bit. I may not have the most detailed descriptions of certain times throughout the day because I was a "tad bit" on the sick side. I have grown up fishing out of morehead city and can count the number of times that I have gotten sick on one hand. Of those times I have always been able to power it through it and fish hard. That was not the case Saturday. I stayed nauseas the entire day. Of the six of us fishing 3 had never been off shore and three of us felt comfortable in the cockpit.
It has been blowing 15-20 down here for about 2 weeks so I just wanted to check in Capt B friday to see if we were still on. He assured me that if we wanted to fish in these conditions, he would take us (which is no surprise coming from the beast, right?). From the moment we cast off it was apparent that this trip was going to be great, and especially to those the guys that hadn't offshore fished before. And that was due the man in pit!!!! Marty instantly began to educate everyone. Before we hit the now wake zone he was teaching everything. From which rods go where in the spread to the basics of how to free spool the line or when to crank; he made it obvious if anyone wanted to learn anything the opportunity was there!! The ride to the grounds took a little longer than normal but upon arrival Marty instantly went to work getting the spread set. I am not positive that we even had all the baits fishing before we had knockdown on the right flat. Marty fed him for a second and we were hooked up on a Saildog!! As we set my brother in chair another rod loads up and we came tight on another sail, but he end up jumping toward the boat and spitting the hook. Marty leadered the first sailfish, and instantly directed me to grab the rod from brother so he come and see the fish. He then instructed him how to take wraps and let him leader his own fish, and get a photo doing it. To me that was cool as shit! We got lines set again not much time went by at all before we were hooked up on a stud wahoo. Then another. Then we had a string of small blackfins. Then a nice run of Mahis. A couple of cudas, and I am sad to say that we also pulled the hook on a couple more sailfish. The fishing was Epic!!! But the cool thing about the trip truly was the experience that Marty let us have in the cockpit. When the fishing was a little slower, he not only showed these guys how to rig baits, but handed them a hook and some ballyhoo and let them do it. He explained everything, and answered any question you threw at him. By the end of the trip he had a guy who had previously never been past shak wiring tuna and gaffing bull dolphin.
At one point I was pretty freakin sick and I could not shake it. I sat down in one of the fighting chairs and Marty told me he was going to try and help me out. He took a towel and soaked it with ice cold water before rolling ice in it. He tied it tight around my neck and poured cold water on my head and ankles. This gave me about 2 1/2 hours where I felt good and was able to get in the back and participate. What i did not realize until that afternoon was that it was in fact not a towel, but his shirt!! The dude took the shirt off his back and iced packed it to try get me in the game. That is a character statement in itself!! Thanks Box!!
Beside the fact it was rougher than I could have ever emagined fishing, it was an unbelievable day!!! Thanks to Marty and Capt Brian for a great trip!!
A couple of classic quotes:
"I am not here to be your role model, I am here to kill fish!!!(Box)
"I dare something to bite my hook today" (Box)
"I guess you didn't want to catch that sailfish"(Beast)
