Got the feedback on the new reels. Now should I go with a 30-80 or 50-100 class on the rods. I will be using them right off the bat for BFT and then add them to the mix for the stream.

I've been using 80's and 130's in the past on other boats. But now that I own my own boat and use it for chartering as well as commercial fishing I've scaled down my gear. Some guys like the big heavy rods and others don't. Just figured I throw it out there and see what guys think. This is a great forum and it really helps to get others opinions on what there using.
Ken, I've SEEN a UNLIMITED BRAND NEW PENN been broken right above the realseat..... (just fyi) A 30-80 is defenitely not gonna cut it imo.

Have a rod built for the line class and drag you are going to use.It dosn't cost much more then off the shelf stuff.
It depends how are you going to fish?Stand Up, Out of the Holder
?or from a chair?
Stand up id go with a 5ft 60-100 with Windon Roller Guides
Chair and in the Holder id go with a 7ft 80 or 130 bent butt
Thanks guys. All the input helps. Mostly all my fishing is stand up. All the years I spent commercial fishing them up North on the big gear I figured I'd scale it back a bit. I'm going to get some nice 50-130 class rods. Hey Jan get ready I'm going to need you to do some pulling.
probably 350, can do with uni.or stora butt..and a few differnt blanks avail
Most 70's are spooled with 80-100lb mono top shot and you may be going towards high 30lb's of drag on big fish.
Go with a 50-100 or 50-130lb rated "blank" rod.
A 5'6" to 6' length stand-up is usually best for most combination trolling/chunking applications, some hard-core stand-up guys are using 5' sticks for maximum leverage with bent butts but for everyday multi-use application your best option is:
50-100 or 50-130lb 5' 6" - 6' rod with unibutt and if your going to be using double lines/wind/ons with bimini's or large knots opt for the wind-on roller guides; this will add about $70-$100 bucks per rod.
When choosing your rods look at the Components and BLANK..Ask what it is..
Should be a Calstar/Seeker or equivalent blank and top-end guides, reels seat and butt such as AFTCO.
You can get a great stand-up rod with top end blank and components including roller guides with unibutt for $350-$400
If you opt for W/O roller guides your looking at $425-475
