    Rod set up?

Thinking about the upcoming season and looking at what I have available to use in the deep blue pond. Not having done the offshore thing for many years and just getting back into it I would like advice on where to put the equipment I have.

    My arsenal includes 2 - TLD 50IIA's, 1 - 9/0 senator, 3 - 6/0 senators, 1 - 4/0senator and 3 - TLD 25's. I figure to run 7 lines max. 2 flats, 2 shorts, 2 longs, and a shotgun. I do not have a dedicated planer rod but thought about using the 9/0 and a smaller planer if I wanted to run one. Boat is 24' CC with a 7' beam.

Using the equipment used above, how would ya'll set a 7 or 5 line spread? Or better yet, what postion would ya'll put each reel in?

I would run the TLD50's in the short riggers and or one in the trap if you use that most Blues tend to come in on these atleast for me.The 9/0 will be ok with a #8 planer bridle rig you may wind up changing drags once in awhile.Run a tld25 on a flat line. Then the 6/0s on the longs thats probably all I would run on that size rig.If your not running the planer run the other 6/0 off the corner.Senators are good reels check the drags if in doubt change them they are cheap.

I understood every thing except "the trap". What does that mean? I'm still trying to learn all the lingo.

Down the middle, just behind, or just in front of, the Shorts.
Your tackle is fine, I would consider starting with only 5 lines for the first couple trips unless it is slick calm---- ya won't catch squat when everything is a tangled mess..
I will give you the best advise you will hear, but one that is hard to follow at first (been there, done that)---- When you're out there and you have such and such here, a fu fu there, a spreader bar in that position, a ballyhoo over in another spot, a bird doing some dumb ass thing half way back to the beach, and things just don't seem quite right--- its cause it ain't right. Reel the whole mess in, stop, quit thinking so much, and just keep it simple--- like a real school of bait--- simple.
    Looking forward to the reports.

Bird, what I call the Mouse trap is a flat or a line off the rod tip down the center, just behind (on the outside of) your shorts, and inside your long riggers. It traps fish sneaking up your spread of fish that have attacked your flats or shorts and gets "trapped on the way out your spread...

Good stuff. Back when I use to fish offshore the basic spread was 2 flats, 2 shorts, 2 longs and a gun.

The flats were - blue and white ilanders with a hoo.

The shorts were - both daisy chains. usually a combo of blue and white ilanders with a streak of red we would put in with a sharpie. (we called it the American series) with a hoo on the end.

The longs were - pink and white ilander on the left and a purple and black ilander on the right.

The gun was usually a green machine bird combo.

Sometimes we would switch the purple and black with a blue and white from the flat. So that the flat was purple black and the long was blue white.

Also occasionally we would run a chartreuse on a long.

I plan on running something similiar when I start back at it this spring.

I also thought about running a bar in between the flats and shorts and another one between the shorts and longs. Of course that may be to much crap in the water.

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate it.
