    Rod planers over downriggers ?

Maybe I'm missing something. I see alot of boats that use planers, use rod planers and #4's mostly. Alot of guy's in my area don't use downriggers or planers at all. I keep 2 downriggers onboard with about 4 of each size planers from #4 to # 32 in my rig anytime I'm going outside. In my opinion canon balls make good paper weights. What is the advantage, or is there an advantage of rod planers? Wahoonbox I'm scared to even ask the pro's and con's of the "sniper rod", never heard of one until I logged on here. I would never even consider giving up my downriggers, but am really interested in you guy's thoughts. Remember Im pretty new to this Sportfishing gig so be gentle!!! Thanks, Frank

Well I guess I should have known. I did some digging in the archives and found the answer to my question, from Capt Box himself. Man this is a great site!!! I saw where he was using a #16 planer with the bridle system. Never saw anything over a #4 here exept on a downrigger, not as much depth as I like to fish at times. A couple more questions answered, Thanks. Guess the next obvious question is what size rod, reel combo is needed. Frank

If you are running the larger planers - (#16 and up), you are gonna want an 80 Class reel. I use a Penn 80 STW - the freespool is not what it needs to be, when I have enough drag to be just right - It is what I had sitting around and actually needs some TLC and some new drag washers...

Many folks recommend the Shimano Tiagra 80 - if I were buying from scratch, that's what I'd do (if I didn't win the auction)

I've also tried an AVET 50 - Just not quite enough drag and still be able to freespool.

The freespool is important to be able to trip the planer easily.

As for the rod, I have a Finrazor Sniper rod - 130 Class bent butt - AFTCO Deep Drop Tip, 3 Fuji SIC guides and an AFTCO Bigfoot Striper guide. The bridle moves easily through all of the guides. I can use that rod for just about any size planer and it doubles as a dredge rod...

Don't worry seapower, both systems work.

Capt. Box, as I said earlier I looked through your archives and found my answer. In the short time I been on this site I've gotten loads of info. I want to know how other people "sucessfully" do it. I look, listen and learn!! Finally got a chance to work on my own boat yesterday, what a change. After working on it all day, I was in the shop till late making up the Mackeral squids you showed on a previous video. I"m with ya Capt. Thanks, Frank
